Possible to download other bloggers’ entire archives?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Suppose you like a particular WordPress blogger, who lists all archived posts and makes them available, as many do; is it possible to download and save his or her whole archive in one go?

  • Unknown's avatar

    That would be content theft.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Content theft? Even if the blogger makes his entire archives available and searchable, just by clicking on archived post links? Please explain. I fail to see how copying each individual post to one’s hard drive differs from copying them more than one at a time. I always thought ‘theft’ was the taking of something that was NOT available for public consumption.

    Just because someone posts something on the internet does not give you the right to download and repost it, or use it unless they specifically give you permission to do so. Any content, created by any person, is automatically copyrighted the moment they write it.

    I have blogs and bloggers shut down all the time for stealing my content and reposting it as their own.

    If all you want to do is keep a copy of it for your own use (and not email it out to friends or give it to others, most people would not have a problem with that BUT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ASK PERMISSION FIRST.

    As far as downloading posts from just one author on a multi-author blog, no, that is not possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Well, it’s theoretically possible actually. I can see a way of doing it. But I, too, am cautious about giving somebody this info without knowing why they want it.

    zekezzyhp945 – can I copy all your posts and pictures and put them on my blog?

    I always thought theft was taking something that was not yours.

    “Just because someone posts something on the internet does not give you the right to download and repost it…”

    zekezzyhp945 isn’t asking to repost it, just if they can download / copy the posts, which happens automatically every time they open a page… when it ends up in their cache.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, but the commonest reason to do this is to repost it; we’re just being cautious. I want more details about what it’s for before I answer.

  • Unknown's avatar

    My question was clear and straightforward and said NOTHING about ‘posting it on my own blog.’ I don’t need all these moral lectures to help make me a better person, so if you don’t have a reasonable answer to my question then go play in another playground.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just tell us why you want to download an entire blog and then we can move forward with giving you the answer. This isn’t getting you anywhere. If you truly like this blogger, then presumably you want to protect their archives from reposting too, right?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @zekezzyhp945
    The answer I provided to your question is reasonable. Downloading the entire contents of any blogs’ archives, without their prior permission of their author who holds copyright and is not required to have a license or post a copyright notice, and then distributing and/or publishing those contents anywhere else in any way, shape or form online or in print media is content theft, that is, copyright violation.

    @zekezzyhp945, most of the responses in this forum come from volunteers. The people who can help you have been around WordPress.com for a while. The people who have been around WordPress.com, or any part of the web, for a while have seen lots of cases of stolen content. Hence their suspicion.

    Your question made me suspicious, and your follow-up hasn’t made me more inclined to want to help you.

    I have had a quick, polite, informative, helpful, and mature reply from WordPress support. What a breath of fresh air that was.

    I’d also like to know this. I am not going to repost or someting like that. It’s just that a year ago I found a great blogger who writes about a ceratin thing I’m in to. All the posts (well 90%) are “wall of text”.

    All this time I’ve been copying his posts and printing them, just because I think their that good and I like to read his texts. And it is allways good to have a backup in my case if the blog should go down and I would feel like reading his texts again.

    So is there any way to download all the posts to the harddrive? I’m using it for personal use and education.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You can save what you want to your hard drive. But if you re-post everything without permission or a link back, then it could get your blog suspended. Especially if you’re taking every post which it seems like you’re doing. If you want them for personal use, maybe make your blog private & password protect.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Not that I know of.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @pornstarbabylon

    Well I’m not going to repost his posts anywhere. I rather have a “hard copy” in paper that I can read i my bed before bedtime, so reposting or something like that isn’t in my mind.

    Someone should create a plugin for this. :-P

  • Unknown's avatar

    @qrac
    We do not have FTP access to wordpress.COM blogs and cannot upload plugins into them.

    Setting that aside, I’m more inclined to encourage the development of a plugin that would prevent others from stealing my archived posts.

    If I in my research go around the blogosphere in search of ideas for writing, find an idea and read a few blogs on said idea, take that idea, and from all that I read, reword it myself, perhaps using a few common words(from those blogs) that run through the topic/idea is that consider content theft, or copyright infringement?

  • Unknown's avatar

    In my mind, if you read a post, like what it says, and then take that post and reword it, that is theft. I’m not sure how the legal profession would sort all that out in a court of law, but in my mind, it is stealing, pure and simple.
