Possible to make the menu show automatically at the top of every page?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have the menu working on the front page but it doesn’t show up by default on new pages and when I try to add the menu manually it puts it at the bottom of the page and refuses, absolutely refuses to be at the very top of the page even when I try to move it. What can I do to make the menu be at the top of every page by default? Note: I am using a blank template.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I noticed that it automatically added “The blog I need help with is” at the end of my post… but I actually have no intention to make a blog I just want to make a static webpage. Is wordpress not used to make normal static webpages as well?

  • Hi there,

I noticed that it automatically added “The blog I need help with is” at the end of my post… but I actually have no intention to make a blog

WordPress started out (in the early days) as a way to create “Web Logs” or blogs, back when that was a new thing. So you still see that used from time to time, even though you can definitely use WordPress.com to buil a static site, or any site you wish. Apologies for any confusion!

I’ve taken a closer look at your site settings and one thing I think it will help to point out is that your homepage and your other pages are not using the same templates. You can see this if you compare their settings in the page editor:

In the Site Editor you can see if you manage all templates that you have modified a few templates (to add a menu and other things) but the pages that use the default “Page” template are using the basic template you see listed here: https://freedom-terror-and-god.com/wp-admin/site-editor.php?canvas=view&path=%2Fwp_template%2Fall&postType=wp_template

If you examine the templates, you will see the first two show as having been edited and it appears you have menus there. You can also edit the other templates to use the same menu. This will allow you to add it at the top of the page.

Note: I am using a blank template.

It may help if I point out that the Blank Canvas theme is indeed meant to be a totally blank slate. The kind of theme an experienced developer might use to create their own custom theme from scratch, for example. It’s not typical to have to add a menu to all your templates and there are other ways that this theme is not at all set up like others.

You may wish to switch to the Zoologist or Twenty Twenty Three theme, both of which are minimal in appearance, but are a bit more set up than the Blank Canvas theme is.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your reply and the theme suggestions. The Zoologist theme seems to be more geared a towards and I have no intention of making a blog Regarding the Twenty Twenty Three theme — do I need to switch to this theme to fix my menu issue? Will changing to this theme fix my menu issue? Really that’s the thing I want to fix the most right now.

    Hi there!

All the themes that support Full Site Editing are suitable for both blogs and traditional websites. It really depends on how you put the layout of your site. If you don’t want a blog, you can just set a page as the homepage. All your other pages will remain as they are (though they will take some of the design elements from the theme you choose).

You can choose Zoology (or any other Full Site Editing) theme. When changing your theme, you may see a prompt that asks if you want to replace your homepage with the theme content. You can opt to keep your existing content so that the homepage content is not overridden with the demo content from the theme.

Note that the menu will not immediately start showing up as soon as you switch to Zoology or a similar theme. You will need to set up the menu so that it shows up across the whole site. You can refer to this page for more info:
