Hi Nathalie,
Yes, you can start with a free domain name and later change to a paid one.Have you seen this page which shows the different WordPress.com plans? https://store.wordpress.com/plans/
If you have more questions, just let us know.

if you think your brand name is important, and you consider the traffic will becoming bigger time by time, then i think its better to register your domain, then building your blog. It is me directly buy my domain, then building my blog. Time by time, my blog grow bigger, my post going more and more. Keep posting.

Thank you :-)
Ok great, I guess I will have to choose the “associate domain name” option for 13 $ (i will probably buy it at godaddy once we have decided the name).
2 more questions :
I see that I can start a blog for free but can I also start building a “real” website for free ? Is it just a question of the theme I choose ?Last but not least :D I’ve seen that theme :
https://demo.infomaniak.com/preview/?t=simplepress&lang=fr
Is it possible to get it on WordPress itself ? I haven’t found it.Many thanks ! Best regards

If by “real” website you mean one with static pages instead of posts, then yes you can do that. Here’s the guide: https://learn.wordpress.com/bonus-round-get-a-home-page/
I don’t see the SimplePress theme available here, either. It’s for a self-hosted site using software from WordPress.org. If you’re curious about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, visit: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Here are the themes you can choose from: https://theme.wordpress.com/
