Possible to turn off the "ignore below signature" function in Post By Email?

I am interested in setting up a blog that serves as a repository for students in my program to email in the conference proposals that we receive and have them posted to the blog. I would like it to be as easy as possible, so that they can simply forward any email that they receive and it will be posted to the site. I have noticed that if i forward an email that includes a signature, it cuts off everything below the signature. Is it possible to turn that function off for my specific blog?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here is the post by email instructions – maybe that will help

I’ve read that. It simply says that it will ignore text below the signature. I’m looking to do the opposite, NOT ignore text below the signature.

  • Hi there,

The post-by-email instructions seem to indicate that although we’ll strip out a signature, we won’t remove the content after that. It would appear that a HR tag would do that, however:

    Signatures

Post by email will automatically remove any email signatures that match the standard signature block pattern:

    (that is dash dash space)

It will also remove anything after a HR HTML tag and attempts to clean up cellphone network signatures.

If your email system attaches a signature that does not match any of these patterns then you can manually tell Post by Email to stop including text by adding the special [end] shortcode on its own line with a blank line above it. Anything after this will be removed from your post.

If you are sending in a forwarded email, there may indeed be several HR tags – they usually show up as a line across the email, sometimes breaking up blocks of text. You can try deleting these manually before you press send (after you’ve hit forward and added your secret email address), and see if you have better luck.

If that doesn’t help you, please just let me know and I’ll be happy to keep helping you!

Thanks for your response. The problem is that I would like to allow multiple people to forward emails to a set up account, so I would like to make it as easy and foolproof as possible. I think that if there are additional steps required for processing the email, they will be reluctant to do it (or simply not do it at all). Is it at all possible to simply turn off that function for the “Post By Email’ address associated with my blog?

  • I’m afraid it isn’t; it’s part of the program that processes ALL incoming emails.

An alternative might be for you to add your students to your blog as contributors, so they can log in and add posts at any time. I realize this is less fool-proof than you may be looking for, but it may provide an option?

Here’s a little bit more about adding contributors, if you’re interested:

I’m really sorry for the inconvenience!
