Post Blank

  • Unknown's avatar

I spent quite a bit of time on a post today and I just checked my blog to find the post body is completely empty. The headline and tags are there, but no entry. What happened and is my post really lost?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In doing more digging it looks like I should be able to choose from revisions from each time the post is auto-saved. Since it took me hours to write the post it was saved often. However, I have no “revisions” option on my post. Is this a paid-only feature?

No revisions are not a paid feature.

If the post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New then you ought to be able to recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/
See also if applicable > restoring from trash http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

(If you are referring to a Page then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-revisions/)

If you cannot locate a revision or restore from Trash the content has been lost and cannot be recovered.

    I recommend:
Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New

Always allow pages to fully load before clicking any other links.

Click “save draft” frequently when creating posts or pages.

Never leave a post or page open for content creation or editing and walk away from it. Save it properly and return to edit it later.

Use an offline blog editor so you have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

Thanks for the reply. I did create the post from the dashboard but somehow there are no revisions displayed. For reference, the post in question is here: http://barefootinma.wordpress.com/2014/06/30/recovering-from-injury-another-way-the-american-healthcare-system-is-failing/

The subject and tags are all there but the body of the post is gone. Does WordPress.com actually have customer support or are these user forums it for help? It seems this was a glitch on their end.

Staff cannot help you with this. I’m sorry to say that the content is gone. However, I’ll tag this thread for a Staff response anyway. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Barefoot,
You are right that there is no revision history for that post. I can’t say for sure what happened, but a few thoughts:
    1) Did you save the post as a draft before you started typing? Usually this helps to have a saved post that the revisions can be logged against.
    2) If you open the post with the same browser you worked on it, is there any kind of autosave message, like this?. If so, that is saved on your computer and may have the content you’re looking for.
    3) Possibly you had some connection issues during the writing of the post and the history was never logged on our servers.

I know this doesn’t bring back your content.

If there is nothing in your browser’s autosave, you will need to restart the post.

Even though we try and build strong auto-saves into the application, it is always better to click the Save Draft (if unpublished) or Update button (if published) to make sure your changes are saved.

What a bummer. I didn’t specifically save it as a draft first, I’ll do that in the future. I do have an autosave message that appears to be from you, but no others. :( I know my internet was stable at the time (we’re on fiber and I didn’t sleep or log out of my machine) but that’s not to say I can be sure there wasn’t a disconnect somewhere else down the pipe.

I really do appreciate your help. Such a shame since I spent a lot of time on this post but I guess it is what it is. In the future I’ll probably go back to copying everything to a separate file before hitting post as a total safeguard.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your post.

Another thing to avoid is having multiple browser windows open editing the same post.

Sometimes users will have a post they’re working on, walk away, then go back to edit the post again (in a different window/tab) and the two open editors will conflict/overwrite one another.

Just another thing to keep an eye out for when working on posts.
