Post by Email and videos

Attaching an .mp4 video file to emails when posting works OK, but
how does one specify where in the blog article the video is supposed to go?When using Post by Email, you create a multipart/related message where the main part is text/html, and images are specified by
<img src="cid:...">that refers to the attachments. But how does one do the same with videos? I’ve tried different variations of
<video> ... <source src="cid:..."> </video>but that doesn’t work: That HTML is stripped by wordpress.com, and the video doesn’t appear in the blog article at all.

Hi there,
Attaching an .mp4 video requires VideoPress(available for Premium and Business plan users)
https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/#attachmentsWhen you upload video via VideoPress, video shortcode will be generated which can be placed in any desired location in your post
https://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/#uploading-a-videoHope this helps.
Thank you.

I don’t really want to edit the blog article after posting, so I need to know the video shortcode in advance, so that I can put it on the right place in the HTML email I’m sending.
Is there no way to do that?

Hi larsmagne23,
That HTML is stripped by wordpress.com, and the video doesn’t appear in the blog article at all.
As @iamrishaan mentioned, VideoPress will be needed to send video files as email attachments and display them using the WordPress video player:
Embedded videos from third parties will display as a URL (rather than a video) with post by email, so your videos would need to be sent as attachments in order to be displayed.

I have VideoPress included in my plan, and as I mentioned, I am able to upload videos via email.
My question is: How do I specify in the HTML portion of the email where the video is supposed to go? Is there a shortcode I’m supposed to include? Is there an HTML snippet that I can use?

Hi larsmagne23,
Sorry, I think I misread your question :) While videos can be attached, it’s not possible to choose where they appear in relation to the content within the same email. The video and content need to be sent in two emails:
Email 1
Send the video to (email visible only to moderators and staff) (which will upload the video to your Media library).
Email 2
- Create a separate email containing the content
- Go to your Media library in the WP Admin dashboard and copy the [wpvideo] shortcode
- Insert that shortcode into your post
- Send the post to (email visible only to moderators and staff)
Although you need to find the shortcode, this method means it is possible to post by email and choose the location of the video.
Are you using a mobile/tablet or a desktop computer?
-
I’m using a desktop computer.
But since I can’t choose the location of the video in the blog post (without having to use the web interface), I guess I’ll just continue to create blog posts with animated snippets using GIFs instead of .MP4s, even though the GIFs are bigger and have worse quality. (Because with GIFs I can just say img src=”….gif” in the HTML portion of the emails.)
Thanks for the clarification. You should perhaps mention that there is no way to embed video in a specific location in the “Post by Email” doc page?
Or even better, fix it so that it’s possible. :-)

Hi larsmagne23,
You should perhaps mention that there is no way to embed video in a specific location in the “Post by Email” doc page?
Absolutely, this is something we will look to expand upon in the documentation.
