Post by Email: Attachments

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi WordPress team,

We are using the option ‘Post by Email’ on our blog: https://ilriannouncements.wordpress.com and it works well except attachments (doc, jpeg..etc).

The problem is that any attachment (doc or jpeg) doesn’t seem to be appearing on the blog post when sent from email…

It just tells us that there is an attachment or picture… But not the real document/picture itself…

What’s wrong with it and how can we fix?
    Thank you for your support

    Hi there,

When you include attachments in a post by email, the way the attachments are displayed depends on the type and number of attachments you include. A single image will be displayed within the post, multiple images will be displayed in a gallery, supported audio files will be displayed in the music player (if you have additional storage space on your site), and other files will have a link to the attachment. You can find more details about that on our Post by Email support page.

If that isn’t working for you, can you share a link to a post you published using post by email where it didn’t follow those guidelines? I can take a closer look at it that way to see what’s going on.

    Thanks for the replay rachelmcr

    [attach 3]
    [attach 4]

The above is what we see when posting by email… These two files where image and doc file attachments sent by email to our blog.

No attachement, what we can see is the above code

    [attach 3]
    [attach 4]

Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi there,

Did you try to send images showing the issue you’re running into? Those images won’t come through in our support forums here. Instead, please upload them into your media library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy, and I can take a look at them there. :)

These are the kind of files that we CAN’T upload through email…
As you said, I’ve uploaded this using Media > Add new option

    Here is an example

    Hi there,

Oh, sorry for the confusion! When you mentioned [attach 3] and [attach 4] in your reply earlier, I thought you were trying to send me attachments in your reply. If I understand correctly now, you mean that text is what appears in your posts when you post by email.

When you write the email, do you attach those files to your emails as email attachments, or do you paste them directly into the body of the email? (The files have to be attached to the email for them to work when you post by email.)

    Hi Rachel,

I attached them as file ‘attachments’ (word, jpg…).
But they never get to appear.

    Thank you for your response.

    Hi there,

What email client do you use to send those emails? I tested the post by email with attachments like the ones you mentioned, and it worked for me, so it may be an issue with how your email client sends those attachments. If I know more about it I can look into that for you.

    We use Microsoft Outlook

We are also having the same problem when we post by email.

Attached images are appearing as [attach 1] and the files are not being added to the media library.

(This is using both Outlook 2015 and gmail)

    Hi there,

I investigated this issue for you, and the problem is actually related to the email address these posts are being sent from. For both of your blogs, the email address that sent those posts is a Contributor user on the blog. Contributors can’t upload files or images, so they are rejected when the contributor tries to post them by email.

Posting these attachments by email will work for other users (Author, Editors, or Administrators) on the blog, so you can either use a different email address to send those posts or you can change their role so those users aren’t contributors. Please let me know if you have any questions!

    Hi Rachel,

Is there a role that will allow images to be uploaded but NOT allow authors to publish the post? Or set the post by email to default to unpublished?

It’s really important that we are able to moderate every post before it goes live.

    Thank you Rachel.

I have the same question as Suzie.

We want to be able to moderate every post before publishing.

Is there a role that will allow images to be uploaded other than ‘contributors’?

    Thank you,
    Liya

    Hi Suzie and Liya,

Only contributors are restricted so they can’t publish posts, so if you want to keep those users from publishing their own posts they will have to be contributors. (You can read all about the available User Roles if you’re interested all of the roles and what each one can do.)

As long as those users are contributors, they will have to send you any media they want to upload so you can add it to the posts for them.
