Post by email- is it responsive?
-
I have set up this blog in order to use it to send a regular emailed newsletter to members. WordPress ‘Post By Email’ looks like a possible way to do this, but there is one crucial question: Are the emails that are generated RESPONSIVE? These emails will need to be readable on a variety of devices.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello.
I have some questions and notes:
1. What website are you talking about? This one: rosesocietyvic.wordpress.com ?
2. From what you wrote, I understand that you would like to send Newsletters to users that subscribed with their e-mail address to your newsletter list. If that’s what you want, Post by email is just a function that lets you post on your blog by sending an email to a specific address. Please read more about it here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/For something like that, you would need to use a plugin made for this functionality, preferabily something that’s connected with a service like MailChimp or Aweber. There’s a plugin called “MailChimp for WordPress” if you want to connect your MailChimp account with your WordPress site.
Please let us know if you need more help on this.

OK. Firstly, thank you for your response. I now see how ‘Post by email’ works, and of course it’s not the right thing. So ‘Mailchimp For WordPress’ looks like the thing needed. It’s not for rosesocietyvic, but for a choir. I’ve set up a new blog with the vague notion the newsletter might have to arise out of a dedicated page, whether ‘page’ or ‘blog’.
BUT I’m using the free version, and is it true that ‘Mailchimp For WordPress’ or any other plugin can’t be used on the free version? Whatever I do has to be free. It’s a charitable organisation, and tiny. -

Timethief, it’s via that searchbox you mention that I found ‘Post by email’. Your snarkiness is not appreciated, no matter how much of a greenhorn I am. It costs little to be reasonably pleasant.
Thank you for the other links, which I’ll read, but once again I have to ask- isn’t it true that Mailchimp can’t be used with free WordPress? that was my plain question. If that’s the case then Mailchimp isn’t for us. -
I was not being snarky at all. I was trying to be helpful and it is my advice that you do not project any emotions into any responses you receive in online peer support forums.
If you want mailchimp pricing information then why not go to the source? https://mailchimp.com/pricing/ WordPress.com does not charge you to use mailchimp.

“the searchbox is the most prominent feature of the page” can be judged for its snarkiness by posterity, projections notwithstanding. As to the advice I did ask for, thank you: I’ll check that link.

“the searchbox is the most prominent feature of the page”
That is a fact and both you and mihaiapetrei who is a new Volunteer will be well served to learn how to use it.

re: wordpress.com blog subscriptions
All that’s required to follow any blog hosted by wordpress.COM is exactly what you were required to provide to register here, and that is a valid email address that the published posts can be sent to.
Here subscribers control their own subscriptions and frequency of receipt of posts from sites they subscribe to. We cannot act on their behalf. More to the point is the fact that when email addresses are submitted for the purpose of receiving blog updates that is the only purpose they can be used for.
You can set up email subscriptions here > Appearance > Widgets > Follow Blog Widget by using this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
Widgets can be configured to appear only on certain pages (or be hidden on certain pages) by clicking on the Visibility button.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibilityWe have a blog subscription shortcode which you can make use of. The help page on it is right here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/blog-subscription-shortcode/ You can also include the subscription shortcode at the end of every post you publish.
You can also create a page and embed the contact form code on it https://en.support.wordpress.com/forms/contact-form/

Sorry for perhaps echoing what was already mentioned, but I wanted to emphasize this point.
isn’t it true that Mailchimp can’t be used with free WordPress?
While we can’t use the plugin that mihaiapetrei mentioned, we do have a MailChimp widget that can be used on any WordPressdotcom site so your site visitors can sign up directly on your site for the email newsletter you publish and send via MailChimp.
But as timethief also mentioned in her above reply, every post you publish on WordPressdotcom is automatically sent out by email and/or posted to the WordPressdotcom Reader to any regular subscriber/follower of your site.
Here again are the relevant links she gave:

Hello colleagues & @rosesocietyvic!
@rosesocietyvic
I did not know yet if the website you were talking about was http://rosesocietyvic.wordpress.com or another one that maybe you bought a payed plan for.
It is true that, in order to install plugins on a WordPress.com website, you would need to have the Business plan (here are all the plans available https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and here is the dedicated business page: https://wordpress.com/business/).
However, because you mentioned in your recent replies that you would need everything to be done with no costs, the information my colleagues gave you above would be exactly what you need and would help you achieve your objective for free.
Please let us know if there is anything else you would still need help with!
