Post by email results in addresses being removed from post text

If I use post by e-mail to add posts to my site, and the text of those posts contain an e-mail address, the address is scrubbed (or, more specifically, everything including and after the @ is removed), so if I tell people to send mail to (email visible only to moderators and staff), in the post it just shows up as send mail to foo.

I can’t seem to find a setting that’s causing this. Any ideas where I can fix it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

I think it will help me to know a little bit more about the why behind this query. Are these personal email accounts that you are directing folks towards?

It’s a status and announcement blog. So, in my announcement, for example, I say “The support address for foo is foo[at]bar.com”, it’s not showing up correctly.

    See https://mcssys.wordpress.com/2018/04/25/update-standardizing-communications-across-cels-divisions-new-mailing-lists/

Until I edited the post, none of the e-mail addresses were showing up as everything including and after the @ was stripped.

  • Thanks for clarifying. We generally advise against publicly posting email addresses, because they’re easily harvested and sold to spam lists. I’m guessing that’s why the post by email feature is pulling those out.

You might be able to get around some (but not all) of the harvesters and around the PBE filtering if you type the addresses as foo @ bar.com , or it may work if you use a mailto link. If you want to give that a try and need help, let us know.

Okay, this makes post-by-email useless to me. I send announcements to a mailing list and BCC my post-by-email list so it’s captured in the blog.

I’ll need to figure out some other solution (or just move it in-house, which I was hoping to avoid).

I see, so a mailto link would not work. And any email address filtering is on the blog unacceptable, right?

I can make a request for a switch to turn off email address filtering, but I can’t promise that would be implemented across our network.

Another option, if the email addresses you’re sending out aren’t changing constantly, might be to create a contact page on the site, and link folks to that rather than to a direct email address. May be easier than moving everything in house, at least.
