post editor
-
When I write a post and then publish it everything in my post is aligned to the left. This makes them difficult to read and it doesn’t look to good. I’ve tried all the buttons etc but I’m spending literally hours trying to get anything posted. I have looked for an online manual that explains how the editor works but can’t find one. Much of the time if I for instance write two paragraphs it will post as one etc. Anyone out there know how I can stop the editor doing this?
-
There are a lot of extra tags in your posts. My guess is that you may be writing the post in Word before actually posting it. If so, this would be the problem.
If not, let us know and I will look further. -
Silly question: How is it supposed to be aligned?
Most written text is aligned to the left.

Thank you…I did at one point get rid of the visual editor but it didn’t help. Is there any way of resetting the editor?. I don’t know anything about editors and never use them. But the one I have on wordpress seems to have a life of it’s own.
-
Must be the visual editor you’re looking at as that’s a normal complaint.
Dashboard -> users -> your profile -> uncheck teh box near teh top and click on the save changes button.
-
In the visual editor, if you do a Control+v, you will get a number of very useful additional editing options. Including, justifying your text, which some professional writers do prefer.

Since I originally put this question I have spent a couple of day’s trying to get the editor to work properly. I have been to the TinyMCE website but the wordpress version is not quite the same as the one there. Most importantly the wordpress version does not have a ‘reset’ button.
My editor just seems to be out of control and have a life of it’s own so is there some way to in fact reset it ? If not is there any way of getting rid of it and downloading a new one? -
I think ozrisk nailed it; you’re pasting in from Word or something else that’s adding all kinds of tags. Those are what’s borking your post. It is the extra tags that Word or whatever is adding in that is interfering with the WordPress editor.
If you’re typing the posts straight into the Write Post box, I can’t imagine what’s happening to do that. Have you tried the Clean Up Tags button in the advanced toolbar, as disembedded suggested?
-
I have tried all the buttons in every possible combination for literally hours on end but just about everything is going wrong. I think it’s what in the old days would have been called ‘broken’.
Apart from starting a new blog is there anyway of downloading a new editor? -
No, there is no way to change the editor on a wordpress.com blog, other than to switch from visual to code and vice versa.
But you didn’t answer the question: are you typing it in the Write box, or pasting from some outside source? Word is a known source for these kinds of problems, and the solution is simply not to use it; try Blogdesk or one of the other offline blog editors. There are literally dozens of threads on this, plus an FAQ about why not to use Word.

raincoaster: The source looks quite clean on his blog. Other than that about every other paragraph tag does not come with style=”text-align:justify;”, which might be causing align trouble.

Than you all for your comments.
I don’t use any other editor. The problem is that when I type something out and it’s as I wish it to be and then hit the publish or save button it reverts to a format that is different to what I originally used. For instance one of the things it does EVERY time is that when I start a paragraph I do so a few spaces to the right in the first line but when it’s saved or published it realignes itself to the left again. I have tried all the buttons etc but just keep ending up with further unintended realignments. -
Yes, and justify is a tab on the advanced toolbar, which should be easy to apply to the entire text at once. But I need to get an answer out of him as to how he’s putting the tags in there in the first place; pasting or using the toolbar or coding. Because the solution is different depending on which it is and at this point I don’t have the information I need to decide whether its’ the editor itself or something different.

Thanks for clearing that up.
Indents don’t work that way in WordPress.com. Spacing won’t work, ever. The themes are coded with defaults and those don’t include indents. Some people suggest putting in an invisible image, or you can code an indent in if you know how to code (sorry, I don’t know that tag at all, it’s in the forum somewhere, search for “indent” maybe?).
Double spacing is much the same; if you hit Enter twice, it’ll eat one of your lines when you post it. That’s coded into the theme and the only way to get around it is to use HTML in the code editor.
The Visual editor is not a sophisticated layout tool; it’s really basic. If you want to do more editing than it allows, you need to code it right in to your posts or get the CSS upgrade and change the defaults on your blog. The good thing about the CSS editor is that you change this once and thereafter all your posts come out the way you want. But you do need to know CSS.

I’m not sure what you you mean about putting tags in. When I write a post I just write it and then save it after which it ends up realigned. Beyond typing in the words I’m not doing anything else.
-
Well somehow some tags are ending up on every second paragraph. And if you want your posts laid out with indents and justification you’re going to have to use tags and code it in the Code editor in HTML if you want those features, because the Visual editor can’t handle them.
The template you use has “align left” as the default. I dont’ know of any that justify text, but there is a feature in the advanced toolbar to justify text. You say you’ve tried everything, so I guess that doesn’t work for you, so I’m at a loss to understand how half your paragraphs have justify tags and the other half don’t.
At this point I suggest sending in a feedback.

Thank you Raincoaster.
I don’t want to do any advanced editing , just the opposite. But the problem is that I can’t post anything as keeps turning out in an almost unreadable format. All I want to do is write very basic posts but it keeps realigning the text when I save or publish. As I say , I’m not doing any advanced editing. By default my post are turning out with all the text realigning itself to the left which makes it difficult to read. And then for no reason the next time I go to save it will put an extra line between paragraphs and then it just looks a mess.
There does not seem to be any reset button so is there any way I can get it to work normally as it did up to about a week ago. I have tried switching off the VE but that does not make any difference. -
Like I said, send in a feedback. And realize that it will automatically align left, like a newspaper; that’s the default. If you try to do anything to interfere with it aligning left, you’re going to run into difficulty. In the feedback you send, include every detail you can; what you’ve tried, what you see before you hit Publish, what you see after, a link to a specific post and what happened there, all of it.
