Post Editor not handling pasted Excel spreadsheet data correctly
-
When I paste spreadsheet cells from Excel (Mac or Windows) into the post editor in Google Chrome , it will not paste correctly. I have to perform a number of tweaks to the tables in order to get a usable result.
On the Mac platform, the result when pasting is that an HTML table is not created. On the Windows platform, the resultant HTML table does not render empty cells correctly and simply skips them in each row.
It appears that you have modified the Post Editor in recent weeks. For my purposes, I would like to see WordPress.com just go back to whatever post editor was in place a month ago, I had no problems with it whatsoever since I began using WordPress.com in 2011.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Michael!
Over the years the post editor has seen a number of significant changes and our main goal has always been to improve the user experience. I am truly sorry if this may have caused you added trouble in pasting spreadsheets into your posts.
As an alternative, you may want to look into embedding spreadsheets via Google Docs or Microsoft OneDrive. You can learn more about those here:

Thanks, druesome, the suggestion to look at Google Drive was useful information. I learned that WordPress.com can now embed Google Spreadsheet cells, which was news to me (I was not able to do it several years ago), and I’ve put that to good use already.
However, it doesn’t address this issue. Google Drive has led me to a workaround for this Excel to WordPress.com issue.
To reiterate, Excel’s clipboard appears to be doing enough to confuse WordPress.com’s editor that I can’t paste directly from Excel to the editor any more. That’s too bad, and I would still like that looked at for myself and others.
What I have discovered is that when I paste from Excel into a Google Drive spreadsheet, and then paste from the Google Drive spreadsheet into WordPress.com’s editor, it pastes successfully.
Google Drive’s clipboard appears to be implemented better than Excel’s, so using will be this workaround until WordPress.com’s editor is improved, or Excel’s clipboard is changed, whatever comes first. I would rather skip having to perform this step.
I use Excel for the Mac 2011 14.4.1
I use Google Chrome for Mac Version 34.0.1847.116 -
Supremely interesting! Thanks for the info. Glad that the Google Drive suggestion somewhat helped you. I’ll have somebody from the team take a look at this and will update you if I hear anything. Cheers!

I was hoping this had been fixed by now. I use spreadsheets a lot and really miss the functionality of pasting from Excel. The editor strips all of the code.

Hey Vivian,
Sorry for the trouble you’re having. For meantime, have you tried embedding Google Docs or Microsoft OneDrive as alternatives?
