post formats

I am just getting started and new to WP

I’m not sure I understand what post formats really do. I’m using the 2012 theme; when I put a draft post into any of the aside format actually changes anything and the others do nothing.

Is this theme really boring and that’s why? I had immense issues finding a theme and I’d still prefer one that has nice features with post formats

When would one use link, quote or status formats?

I’d like to encourage you to search the Support site first (see top of any forum page) before posting in the forums because very often one can find an answer much quicker than having to wait until someone sees your forum post and replies.

Here are the returns I got when searching for “post formats” http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=post+format

If you have any question after that, just let us know.

  • You can also look at this article: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/workings-of-duster/

It covers the Twenty-Eleven theme, but the first section gives an overview of the basic workings of the post formats. As far as I know, these basics work the same no matter the theme, though the actual appearance of each might differ from one theme to the next.

    Hi Jennifer

I understand not to waste everyone’s time before reading any basic support or tutorial page. I read the support page, tried each format in a draft and found that the format looks little changed or is so subtle as to make the format useless.

In the support page, however, all 5 examples make a significant difference than the standard post format. This led me to believe either I am missing something or as in the case of several support posts, it could be worded a tad clearer such as “some themes may provide subtle changes that look nothing like these examples.”

So I guess the answer is that my choice of theme is too minimalist for my preferences.

I apologize for my poor choice of questions

    No worries!

On some themes, the different post formats are very obvious. On others, hardly at all. But all of them only appear when viewing the front/home page of your site. You won’t see them when previewing or viewing a single post.

The best way to get a feel for how post formats look with your selected theme is to check out the theme’s demo site. For Twenty-Twelve that’s here: http://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/
