Post Formats for free WordPress blogs

Hello Support
Although I’m using the Edin Theme for my test site and see Post Formats for posts, how do I know if these Post Formats are activated or not? I see from my research that those with hosted Sites can access their Site’s PHP files and activate / modify the Post Format characteristics.
I have tried the Gallery Post Format by checking it then adding several photos, and the method of creating & publishing the Post is exactly the same if I do not select Gallery Post Format i.e. I see Create Gallery on the left and use that.
The result is exactly the same whether I use the Gallery Post Format or not, so is there any benefit to using Post Formats for the free sites, and how do we know if the Post Formats even if existing, are enabled or not?

The Post Formats depend a lot on the theme that you are using. If you see the “Post Format” module in your post editor, then it means that the theme you are using does support them. However, certain themes make the difference between post types much clearer, while it’s a bit more subtle with other themes. With Edin, the different types looked pretty similar when I checked my test site. However, after changing to some other themes, it became more obvious.

One more note about Edin:
On your site, you can see that it includes a little icon in the bottom left of your posts near the “Leave a comment” link. You can click the icon to see all of your posts that belong to that particular post format. -
aha thank you dphyled your clear and helpful information has helped me alot. I have never felt inclined to use Post Formats but have been wondering how much use they are without further styling or customizing if running a hosted site!
The Image post format gives quite different results for different Themes but the Gallery Post Format really “threw” me because I note one sets up a gallery the same way with Standard post format, but I guess having the connection via a link will take one to all related post formats.
