Post getting thousands of views: I’ve deleted it but still getting stats
-
I hope someone from Support can help here. I had a post reviewing Elizabeth Day “Friendaholic” which started getting hundreds to thousands of views a few days ago. I tried putting a comment at the top asking people to comment where they found it – nothing. Then I turned it to private, views kept coming. Turned to draft – views kept coming. Deleted – views kept coming! I have searched for where this is coming from and can’t find a link. It’s definitely not subscribers as it’s way out of my usual stats. Now doing a search for Friendaholic “Adventures in Reading” brings up all my March 2023 posts rather than a 404 post so does that mean it will come off the search engines one day? Thank you!

Hello there,
The most views I saw for one specific post or page was 5,885. Are you still seeing hundreds of thousands of views anywhere?
Also, once a post or page is no longer public, it can take Google four to six weeks to re-index your site. So, it can take some time for it to be removed from search results.
Did you unpublish the post due to concerns about where the traffic came from?
Please let us know if we can do anything else to help, and have a good day!

Thank you for getting back to me. Just to be clear, as I said in my OP, it was hundreds TO thousands, as in some days hundreds, some days thousands. I was concerned because it was a lot more hits than I ever get on any posts, and most seemed to come from searches with no comments left, this is not common for my blog so I was concerned it was bots or other negative entities trying to leave spam comments etc (my actual spam folder has stayed as usual but obviously WP will have been deleting the most nefarious before it reached me).

Hi there! 👋🏼
Thank you for clarifying.
I checked the stats and noticed that for the higher-traffic-than-usual dates, the majority of visits came from search engines (Google, specifically).
💡 There is nothing wrong with this unless you notice the increase in spam comments (which could indicate that your blog was targeted by some spammers).
Apart from that, there may have been an increase in some search keyword popularity on these dates, which resulted in your blog getting more traffic than usual 😊
