Post isn't saving properly
-
Hi, everybody. I essentially have two issues. These are new issues to me; I have many blog posts, both public and private, and this is the first time it has happened.
The post in question is a private post that I created about a month ago using the ‘new’ publishing feature (as opposed to the old way that you can still access via WP Admin). I regularly save while I’m working during the same browser session.
First Problem:
Despite the fact that it shows the post has been saved and the text has updated itself in the window, when I load the post in a different browser session, it has reverted all saved changes from the last session! I can’t tell you how much text I have lost at this point, and it’s starting to drive me crazy.
The first time I noticed it, I had made an update using the Android app. I figured it timed out somehow when I hit save, so I stopped using the app. Now it’s happening when I edit on the web (using Chrome and Firefox — the problem has happened with both, I believe).
I checked my revision history, and it only shows some of the saves/updates that I made.
Second Problem:
Another issue I’ve had: all formatting has been lost, turning the post into one big wall of text. It hasn’t done that since I stopped using the app.
I’m willing to do without the app, but I’m still troubled by save failure. Is there something I’m missing, or something I need to do differently?
Thank you!

It sounds like you didn’t click to save as the very last step. Could that be the case? When you save a post in the new editor, it will say “Saved Draft” at the top right, but if you make edits after that, you still need to click the “Save Draft” button again to save the newer changes. [Update: this is going to be changed in a future update.]

In the newer editor, you must click the save button manually.

I’ve heard of that happening before with content that was copy and pasted from another source, for some reason sometimes some of the underlying formatting gets lost as a result. That can happen in any of the editors, but it sounds strand for the Android app. If you try creating a new draft, are you able to reproduce the problem where it gets saved as a wall of text in the Android app or did it only happen the one time? Are you copying and pasting any of the content or completely typing in the content yourself?

Thanks for the reply!

I am positive that I am pressing Update. (Believe me, that did cross my mind, haha.) I am always seeing the little pop-up message at the top that says my post is “Lookin’ good!” That’s part of what had me so puzzled.
Now if there’s a different button I’m supposed to be pressing, that would be the culprit. My Update button is at the bottom of the edit box, and that’s what I press to save the updates.

This happened on two different posts (the one that didn’t save and another one I created after it). I believe the first time I created it, part of it was copy/paste, but after that it was edited right out of WordPress, no more copy/paste.
Further, it only happened once with the post that keeps losing information, but it happened twice with the other post, to the point I haven’t even attempted to update it since then. I am not entirely certain that both times were related to the Android app (and if it did happen both times, only one would have been an edit; the other would have been a view).
Earlier today, I added something to the post on the old editor, saved it, then revisited in a new browser with the new editor — it was still there. I’m debating creating two entirely new blog entries, just to see if it helps the issue (or if I can duplicate it — in the beginning, I just figured I didn’t hit save).

Sounds like you’re clicking the right one to me. The button label changes depending on whether or not it has been published before or if it’s still a draft.

Copy/paste for even just part of a post can do funny things. If that’s happening to you, one thing you can do is click the last button in row 1 to reveal a 2nd row of editing options:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-1Then make sure “paragraph” is selected in the dropdown in row 2 for each paragraph. If those are lost for whatever reason (copy/paste is one possible reason), then it can cause the type of formatting trouble you described before.

Thanks for the tips on copying and pasting. As for the failure-to-save issue, I am going to test a little and see if I can duplicate it. In any event, I’ll be more cognizant of what I’m doing prior to something happening, so if it does turn out to be an issue, maybe I can help figure out how to fix it.

I’ve had the same problem since this new interface/version came about. I clicked “save draft” and it seems to work (several times), then randomly I get the “OOPS, THIS METHOD ISN’T WORKING” and the post reverted back 3 saves and turned into a wall of text. I lost 2 hours of work.
This is unacceptable. Please fix.

@glitnir76, what you described shouldn’t happen. If you’re interested in providing more details about your setup, that could help us track down whatever might be causing this problem for you. For example, what browser and browser version are you using? Also, when the “oops” message appears, do you have a lot of browser windows or tabs open? Can you copy the exact error message and paste it in a reply here if you see it again?

Well, it happened again.
I loaded my private post earlier today in Firefox. Everything was fine, all of my edits have been saving. I wasn’t able to actually do any work on it (wishful thinking when I opened it, I guess!), so I simply closed out the tab.
When I reloaded just now, I lost all formatting. I now have a 5287 word text wall. I am, needless to say, pretty annoyed.
I had done no copying, no pasting, no nothing. Just … loaded it about 12 hours ago, left it open for 4 hours, closed it, re-opened it just now, and all formatting has disappeared.

Something to note…
I was trying to find my revision history to see if it gave me any kind of feedback. I decided to hit the Preview button, instead of Edit, and all of my spacing is there. It just won’t show up in the Edit pane anymore.
This isn’t helpful, of course, because I still need to format it so I can actually read it in Edit … just interesting. Maybe helpful to the troubleshooters.

Apologies for the delay. @perfectvelvet what you described about a wall of text shouldn’t be happening. It has been a while since you last posted about it here in the forums. May I ask if you’re still having trouble with it?
If you’re still having trouble, here are a few additional questions that
Is your browser up-to-date?
http://browsehappy.com/When you edit, do you open multiple browser tabs or windows?
I had done no copying, no pasting, no nothing. Just … loaded it about 12 hours ago, left it open for 4 hours, closed it, re-opened it just now, and all formatting has disappeared.
In that scenario, do you recall if you saved before you left it open for 4 hours? Do you leave posts you’re editing open in a browser window like that often?
-
Yes, the issue is still occurring.
My browser is up to date. When I edit, I do have multiple tabs open — but that post is only in one tab. (I don’t have that one post in multiple tabs.) No, generally, I do not leave it open for that long without activity. If it’s open for a long period of time, it has received multiple edits and saves.
I have pinpointed the problem, at least to my own liking. It ONLY happens in the new editor (not if I edit the post via WP Admin) and it only remains an issue if I hit save. Even if it’s a big wall of text, the actual post is not (when using preview). So I just back out and open the post in WP Admin, and it works fine. I just wish I had figured that out in the first place. Would’ve saved so much frustration.
So that seems to be the bottom line: when opening a document to edit, the new editor will occasionally remove all formatting. It seems to be in view only, and if you look at your document via WP Admin or (occasionally but not often) refresh your edit – without hitting save – everything goes back to the way it was before.
Along those lines, sometimes when I open my document in the new editor, it will only have a miniscule area visible — maybe 3-5 lines of text — instead of the text box going down to the bottom of the page. A refresh/reload fixes the issue.
So am I still having issues? Yes. But I’ve found a workaround that is not too troublesome, so I suppose I’m fine now :)
