Post lenght and map insertion

  • Unknown's avatar

We have been on WP for almost a month and are finding it very cumbersome to do the simplest tasks. Can some please answer 2 questions:

    1) we don’t like the layout where the entire text is displayed with each post. For example, is there a way to have the first few sentences shown, then a “Read more” link which would expand the article? We have the Flounder theme and it looks like a series of long run on of thoughts…

    2) I was told there was no map option on WP which would plot our journey (which is ridiculous BTW). I have created a map on “go pro traveling” and would now like to embed this link into a header post at the top of the blog.

    Please help.
    Thanks

  • Hi there. If you find it difficult to work on this platform it might help if you worked through the tutorials first. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it gets much easier as you learn how the platform works. Work through the “Learn WordPress” support doc (http://learn.wordpress.com/) and the “Video Quick Start” tutorial (http://en.support.wordpress.com/video-quick-start/) for the basics on how to run your blog.

is there a way to have the first few sentences shown, then a “Read more” link which would expand the article?

You do this by adding the more-tag to your posts. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Interactive and live maps make use of JavaScript and Flash code which can be used to introduce malware and viruses into the system. As we all use the same software a piece of malignant code introduced on one blog can bring down the entire platform, and for that reason JavaScript and Flash is not allowed here.

However, there is one map option. You can embed interactive Google Maps to your blog and can also create and embed custom Google Maps. http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/

If you merely want to add a link to a map hosted elsewhere you insert the link as you would any other text or image link: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
