Whether or not you can do this will depend on a combination of your skill with CSS and what you would like to change them to.
You can make changes to those using a Custom CSS upgrade, but what you can alter will be limited.
I’d like to encourage you to investigate some of the other themes on WordPress.com as well; you might find one that has navigation more to your liking and in the process might find something else you like.

Thanks I think you’re right. I know I can change basic stuff like the font color, etc. with the CSS upgrade. But the changes I been wanting to do are done in the .php files which I don’t know hot to access…

We cannot access let alone edit the templates underlying our themes at wordpress.com, as this is a woprdpress multiusser blogging platform. If you could do what you suggest theme every other wordpress.com blogger using the same theme would find their blogs were likewise affected. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
There is a wide variation of navigation link display forun in wordpress.com theme on front pages, on dynamic pages (category/archives) and on single pages. If you prefer an alternative navigation link display then these posts will help you select a different theme that suits you better.

thanks a lot! do you know if I at least can get the navigation links to not show the names or the posts, for instance just to display the words “next” and “previous”?

I’m sorry but I’m not an CSS expert and don’t have an answer for you. We only have a couple of Volunteers (primarily one ) who assists with CSS esiting.

Check the second link timethief gave you and switch to one of the themes listed under A or C.
