Post page on Twenty Eleven Gutenberg
-
I have never used the post page format on any of the WordPress sites I have made so I am not really familiar with how it should work.
On this site the post page viewed on its own is centered but when its added on below the Page format page it gets pushed over to one side.
I have played around with the layout options and cant seem to get it centered.
Is this the way the post page should appear? Also I cant seem to figure out how to easily delete images, especially when they are inserted in columns.
The only way I have figured to do it is in code mode.I am giving Gutenberg a vigorous testing on WordPress.com and a self hosted site to try and prepare for the next core update.
Had an unsuccessful and scarey experience when I jumped in tried it to edit a page on a premium WordPress.com site that I take care of and ended up bailing out.
Luckily the premium site only gets updated a few times a year so there is no real crisis at this time.
At this point I am planning on rebuilding all twenty odd pages after the core update because I can’t take the chance of that its going to freak out on someone trying to edit the page.
Right now its no big deal as I am the only user.Gutenberg is going to be cool once all the bugs are worked out.
Thanks for your help.

Hi –
Thanks for getting in touch and trying out Gutenberg. The feedback is helpful in order to work out all the bugs and kinks.
Can you tell me more about the experience you had when editing the page in Gutenberg?
– which block types did you try?
– were there issues?
– which browser and version number do you use?
– operating system and version number?
– any browser extensions enabled? If you’d rather, any of the issues experienced can be directly added for our team here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues
—————
For the image formatting issue: is that happening on dragoonarts.wordpress.com or a different site? And which page specifically are you working on. With that information I can take a closer look.

Hi
Browser Firefox ESR
52.9.0 (64-bit)
O.S.
Debian Linux 9.0Oh yes lots of issues.
A couple are mentioned above.
Where to start ?The reason I posted this in the theme section was I was trying to point out issues I am having that may be specific to the Twenty Eleven theme like how the post page appears and how it should appear.
I was also hoping to leave some clues for others using this theme just in case I run into anything that may be helpful.I have been testing on the free version and the self hosted version and not much on my premium version site yet.
After this weekend I will focus on the premium version because the site is at its peak usage right now and after the weekend it will slow back down.I had some major issues trying to use it on the premium and had to have it removed by you guys because it would not let me revert back to the old editor to finish the updates I was working on.
It would seem that the free version, self hosted version and Premium versions of the theme are all slightly different.
I was very happy to hear that Twenty Eleven had been updated for blocks so I don’t have to think about finding a new theme for the site right away.
If posting these issues on the github site will be the most productive then thats what I will do.
What kinds of things would be most helpful to post on this Theme forum?

Ah, got ya.
Twenty Eleven has a widget area to the right of the posts on the Showcase template. Try heading into Customize and adding a Showcase Sidebar widget and you’ll see what I mean.
In many newer themes, we automatically fill up the full width if there aren’t any sidebar widgets.
But we’re careful about making significant design changes to older themes on our servers, since the updates affect everyone running them. Instead we tend to release new themes under a different name or even with a version (like Baskerville 2). I’m not sure whether we’ll do that with twenty eleven, but do know in the meantime it’ll look more normal with widgets in that space.
About bugs and what not? You’re welcome to check for existing issues on Github and post if you have a new one:
https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/ <- self hosted / general Gutenberg
https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso <- issues that exist only in our editor here
Or you’re welcome to post here too and let us sift through things and post to Github as needed. Just add a modlook tag to a new thread if you’d like Staff to take a look.
We’ve updated our version again here, so if you’re still having issues deleting images can you send more details?
For what it’s worth, I’m adding a column block, adding image blocks to each column, then deleting images by clicking the three dots and clicking remove. If you’re doing something else, let us know.

Sorry last reply was logged into the premium.
It gets a little hard to remember to log out and in and out sometimes as I bounce back and forth. In regards to your question about the image problem it is happening on both the free site and the self hosted site.
I will see soon how the premium site does but wont be messing with it till sunday. One of the image issues that happens is once you have inserted the image there is no longer a control to delete it.
I can not point you to another specific page other than the one I have posted here as I ended going into code mode to delete the images. One thing I was working with was the column block.
It did not seem to matter the number of columns 2,3,or 4.
Once the type or image was inserted there was no obvious way to delete. It looks like the image centering issue from the last version of gb has gotten a bit better but still happens.
Will try and get examples of it happening.
You put down an image block and set it to center and it wont go.I will not be able to dig back in for more testing for a few days but when I do I will try my hardest to document what I see happening.
Have a screen recorder ready to record what is happening and will give that a shot.
There are all kinds of other odities going on and sometimes it is a bit hard to focus and keep track of each thing thats going on.I wish I could be more help to you guys because you have an incredibly huge amount of fine tuning to do.
I know this will all work out fine eventually.
Your hard work and patience will pay off. -
Thanks for the reply I will try the 3 dot trick.
Do not remember seeing them.
If I am not seeing those I will reply back.
Also thanks for the links you sent.
I will explore them in the morning.Calypso !
Man I can never remember that name.
Hopefully it sticks this time.
Great ship.I realize this probably sounds like the ramblings of a mad man and I really wish I had something more productive to contribute.
Ok onto more fun…
On the widget deal thats another issue.(issues)
I am very familiar with the widgets for this theme and also noticed some other odditys there.
So far have been testing side bar and footer just to see how they react compared to the old editor.
Things have defiantly changed but I cant give you any specifics.
I will be going back into sidebars and widgets as one of my sites depends on them.
Will concentrate to get some useful documentation. On the free page I tried setting the page with side bars and widgets and then choosing the corresponding layout option in customizer but it had no effect.
No matter what I did the post page always looks the same.
Not being familiar with post page I wasn’t sure what to think.Ok one more oddity just for fun…(on self hosted site)
I set up a page using the showcase template with content on left in the customizer.
It comes out centered and choked with large margins.
Switched to content on right, same thing no change.
Set it to one column no sidebar it got even skinnier on the page.
Switched it back to content on left and just for fun adjusted the outside page margins and article margins and poof it snaps into shape and it responds to all the css I tried.
Just to see what would happen I removed all the css and the article margins stayed.
Could not get it back to the original state.
I put the outer page margins back in and article is still wide.
Removed the css and the plugin (simple css) deactivated it and used the built in css editor and had same results.
So what did I prove with all this fiddling around?
Not much.
I did identify that there issues there but did not determine what they are.
Ok so Ive got issues.I started taking individual screen shots of each change I made just so I could go back and compare them.
Very helpful. If nothing else just being able to talk about the Gutenberg experience has been a very positive experience.
I was extremely disappointed (putting it mildly) with gb many months ago and recently but now I feel like its really starting to come together.
Can not even fathom the amount of work going into this project.
This is a very big deal.I will always miss tiny though.
Thanks for your time.

Hi there!
Thank you so much for reporting those issues! Have you tried searching for similar ones or report them in the official GitHub repository for Gutenberg?
https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/
If you don’t want to do it yourself, you can report the issues in this forum and we’ll carry them over to the GitHub repository.

Hello
Will look into the github and concentrate on reporting issues better.I did find the 3 dots Supenovia pointed out and it did the trick.
Guess I am just so used to being able to clik the image and getting that edit popup.I tested the image position functions and the center image that was a problem is now working fine.
I am thinking that the responsiveness issues I was experiencing may have been related to my isp as things are quick and responsive this morning.
No more errors when saving.
Still cant make sense of the featured post running to the right side of the page but maybe thats where its supposed to be, I don’t know.
Guessing that most of the hassles I am experiencing can be chocked up to learning curve on my side.
I can see how writers may be frustrated having large areas of text being broken apart into separate blocks.
One of the concerns I had was being able to go back and edit a list that was created with the old editor and running into problems.
It took long enough to try and explain to people how to edit with the last 2 editors and I was afraid it would be too much to ask them to learn a new way.
Now I don’t think that will be a big deal.
Basically all that I need to do is copy the list over to the new editor and things should be fine.
This is an example of what I am rambling endlessly about.
https://dragoonarts.wordpress.com/test/
It works just fine !
Not sure yet how it would affect a list from the old editor but I will find out soon enough.
I plan on converting each page anyway so no big deal.I think this new editor will work out just fine..
I pity the poor people that have to try and charge their customers for additional time because of it.
Not a problem for me as I am working for free any way. -
Still cant make sense of the featured post running to the right side of the page but maybe thats where its supposed to be, I don’t know.
When I go here, https://dragoonarts.wordpress.com/ and look at the “He Rakes It In!” post, I see what you’re talking about. The entire post is shifted over to the right side of the screen.
When clicking to open the post on it’s own page though, the right alignment issue isn’t observed on my end.
Then, I checked the theme setup instructions and the theme demo site. At the demo, you can see, that the posts are also shifted to the right there. It’s because the left hand side bar is reserved as widget space.

Thanks for looking into it Liz.
I am going to put the post page as a sidebar page with some widgets and see what happens.
Thought I had tried that option but maybe not.
It still hangs to the right even though the layout options in customize are set to content on the left.
If you are curious check back and see what setting it to a side bar do.Thanks again for the input.

After more fiddling around it seems the issue is something with the wordpress.com Free version of Twenty Eleven.
On my self hosted site I took all the pages out leaving only a post page and it lines up centered.
Here is a screen shot of it.

If you put in a widget it works as it should and the Layout position selectors in customizer also function.
The Free version has some issues with the layout positions in customizer.
Maybe the premium version works as it should, don’t know yet.Just because I am curious, sometime I am going to start from scratch and set the page up with sidebars.
There was one real odd thing that happened with the Gutenberg plugin enabled and the classic editor disabled.
While editing the post page it would change back and forth from block editor to classic editor randomly.Down the road a ways I would like to offer the Post page as an option as a place the community historian can do her thing.
You can see her current offerings here.
https://cascabel.org/news/
She is an old school print editor and any mention of the word Blog will send her into a tizzy.
I will have to work this in nice and slow and never ever say the word Blog. -
I forgot to mention that I noticed Gutenberg is functioning much smoother but I did notice there is still a lag or freeze when you update the page.
The updates get made but it doesn’t always indicate that.
Sometimes it finishes and you see a veiw page button. All in all everything seems to be working nicely.
