Post public with email notification suppressed?

I love the format and layout feature of categorizing posts. I use this to provide linkage to relevant articles in the media regarding our raised awareness topic. However, as there can be multiple items a week and even per day, we fear an email for each new post will cause followers to drop.
I have looked high and low all weekend to see if choosing email notification for new posts is an option as I would like to turn it off and maybe use it for only take action or big news posts. I can’t find anything about new post email suppression only how to email more
I found reference in a forum question that indicated to do the initial post as private then ensure email on post update is not checked and update to post public. I tried this and the initial public post did send email.
Is the re a way around this? I hate the idea of making pages and losing the widget capability of a recent post summary on the home page

I understand your concern, but we leave the decision for this in the hands of the readers.
If you think people might be turned off by the number of emails, you can encourage them to change their notification settings if they’re getting too much email:
