Post scheduling

Our scheduled posts are going live at strange times – that we did not schedule.

And now for something completely different, does anyone know what time zone the WordPress servers live?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Are they off by a specific amount every time?

Unless you changed your blog time, the default is to UTC 0000 – Or Greenwich (London, England) – the server location does not matter

Scheduled Posts are published at the first visitor following the scheduled time – the published time is then set to the scheduled time – so if the scheduled time is 3:00 am and your first visitor shows up at 4:40 am – that is when the Post will be published and the time set to 3:00 am

I have scheduled 3 posts and they have not gone. I set them up for 1:05a.m est. I wake up and they are not posted. I have to have them go as people are expecting them. What am I doing wrong? I’m not sure I understand the answer from “auxclass” above.

  • As Auxclass points out, there has to be a visitor to your blog AFTER the scheduled time in order for a scheduled post to publish.

You can check your timezone settings here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/general-settings/#timezone

If you have your timezone set incorrectly (for a location other than yours) that would cause problems with your scheduled post. Which is why I was asking if they are off by a specific amount every time.

Thank you. I have done everything correctly. Right time, people have gone to my blog AFTER the post schedule. It’s not working. I’m using military time, right? So, 1:05 a.m. is correct? Otherwise, 13:00 would be 1p.m. The viewers are expecting my blog to be ready at midnight and by, say, 8 or 9a.m. people want to see my tutorial, it’s still shows my last blog post.

  • Have you checked to see if your timezone is set correctly for your location?

  • Also, by some chance, do you have more than 100 posts scheduled?

  • Unknown's avatar

Never more than one post at a time is scheduled and timezone is correct. I did check that first.

  • So, the next time that you have a post scheduled and you don’t see if publishing. Can you try logging out of WordPress.com and visiting your site? That should trigger the post.

  • Unknown's avatar

By that time, it will be too late. I have had people go to my site way before I do the next morning. Them going to my site, does NOT trigger it. I think we have to admit here there is a problem.

A couple of troubleshooting hints – subscribe to your own blog using email – the time stamp on the email will tell you when the Post was made (assuming the email server is set correctly (mine was not one year) ) –

The Sparklines at the top bar will give you a crude indicator of traffic over the last 48 hours – I have Site Meter installed (it’s clock was off a bit last I checked) – but it has time stamps for visitors as does Cluster Maps

That will give you a bit more info that will help the staff chase down the problem for you

  • judysheart,

Do you have any posts scheduled currently?

  • Unknown's avatar

I do follow my own blog. Wouldn’t the date stamp only show the time it was published? Pardon my ignorance here but I don’t know what 48 hours you are referring to. I don’t see any issues with visitors once I’m published. I have a lot of hits and views. I think I just have to stay up late for the evenings I have a deadline by midnight.

  • Unknown's avatar

I do not. But, I can try to pull one together. Are you thinking of a test of some sort?

    Sparklines: http://en.support.wordpress.com/admin-bar/#follow-like-reblog-and%C2%A0sparklines

Not all that easy for me to read

yes the email time stamp will show the time published – scheduled for 0100 (1:00 am) – you get the email at 3:00 am – you know the Post was published at 3:00 am (if you then look at the Post however the time will show 0100 for published)

Then the next question is did you have visitors between 1:00 am & 3:00 am or just a single visitor at 3:00 am – that was why I suggested Site Meter

One mistake I made for some scheduled Posts when they were supposed to go out the next morning was I set the date wrong and forgot to advance the date to the next day – seems to me I might have gotten some sort of behavior I was not expecting –

I would also imagine that there are some sort of server logs the staff might be able to look at (we can’t) to indicate visitors

I just went into the last blog I scheduled. I clicked on edit to see it. It says it was published at 1:05 on 11/22, which is correct…but it did not go. When I went into the blog that morning and it wasn’t gone, the “publish” button was active for me to click. My first comment was published at 8:52a.m. after I approved it. However, she could not visit my blog until I pressed publish.

Yes, I double checked my date and time so many times (think obsessive here), because I had this schedule issue in the past, so I made sure it was correct.

I’m going to do another short post for a give-a-way. I’ll do that today and schedule it for tonight sometime.

Now, i’m wondering, do I need to give them the post address and NOT MY blog address. What’s happening here is during a blog hop. So, blogs have a list of other blogs to click on, but they are only using thekteytomyart.wordpress.com URL.. not the actual post name. Does that matter and did I just make sense?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes you made sense – but don’t send out the URL of a Post unless it has been published – they will probably get a 404 not found – just the base blog main page should work fine

I ask about some of the did you check things just to make sure –

    good luck

  • Also, just to check:

Did you save your post as a draft rather than schedule it? For the post to publish, you must change the time/date, click “ok” and then click the Schedule button.
