Post Tagging and Post Deletion
-
Hi,
My question is what happens if I assign a tag to one of my posts, say the tag “creative writing” for example, and then I later delete that post altogether from my site.
Will the post also be deleted/removed from the “creative writing” tag page feed in the WP reader once the post is deleted from my site, or will the post remain in the tag page feed in the WP reader forever regardless of whether its been deleted from my site or not?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Good question. There is certainly a lot of junk floating around in my Reader tags, but I hadn’t noticed until reading your question. Guess I still haven’t found a good reason to visit the Reader.
-
-
Is it removed/deleted immediately as soon as I delete the post from my site, or does it take some time for the post to be deleted from the WP reader tag page(s)?

Post tags are not automatically removed from your tags collection when you delete a post. You’ve got to remove them. This has become a rather large problem for me, because I’ve deleted many posts, and wasn’t aware for some time that the tags remain. It’s easy, but time-consuming, to even bulk delete tags because you can only display 20 at a time.
WP reader once the post is deleted from my site, or will the post remain in the tag page feed in the WP reader forever regardless of whether its been deleted from my site or not?
I’m very curious about whether they remain in the Reader, or elsewhere in WordPress tags, because for a long time I’ve been routinely seeing evidence in my stats of searches for tags that appeared on posts which were deleted from my site long ago, even years.

I discovered another issue with Reader tags while investigating those mentioned above.
The Reader includes categories as tags. But that’s not the issue. The problem is that I’m finding at my Reader more than a few tags which are actually categories in published posts of mine on non-private websites, give the following result when clicked on:
Don’t see any posts under the tag you searched for? That’s because there are no posts with that tag yet; maybe you should write the first one.

If by “they” you mean deleted blog posts, then yes me too, I’m still not 100% clear or sure about this.
Do deleted posts remain in the WP reader tag feed pages at all after being deleted and if so, for how long? I.E. a post with the tag “hamburgers”, would it remain on this page: (https://wordpress.com/tag/hamburgers/) at all after being deleted, and if so for how long, or would it just be removed immediately from the tag feed page upon deletion of the post?
Sorry if this sounds repetitive, I’m just not 100% clear and sure about this and I want to be 100% sure before I add any tags to any posts on my site.

@nightskyjournal
No. I meant tags. There are a lot of tags in my Reader which link to nothing, in some cases when they should link to posts. So it’s difficult to know (without digging) which of them are junk and which broken links for unknown reasons, as I’ve described above. They’re gone.
@raincoaster,
I was referring only to the possibility of tags somewhere other than at my post tags page, https://MostAmazingSite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag.My stats are showing tag searches on tags years after I deleted posts containing those tags. It happens so frequently, I’ve suspected that there were links to the tags somewhere. One who knows how to can, of course, enter a tag search a website directly into their navigation bar, but it’s odd to see the same tag search multiple times monthly, from the same country.

I meant “tag search of a website.” These tag searches are showing up in Feedjit stats, not WordPress stats as I recall.

Hey all,
To respond to the original question, your posts will be updated/removed in the Reader, however this may not happen immediately. If you make a change and you don’t see the effect within 24 hours let us know and we can take a look.
@musicdoc1 – I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking? Can you give me a specific example of the problem you’re having? Links would help.
-
Thanks. I don’t know. Perhaps I should begin a new thread? It’s not really one of the major issues I have at the moment, since I don’t use the Reader. I discovered the those failed links after reading the initial post here.
-
Well, I can take a look if you want to give me a couple of links. Otherwise, you know how to hail us! :)

The following are Reader tags which are categories on my inactive (but not private) site bossanova1.WordPress.com:
1º Festival de MPB 1965
2º Festival da MPB
4º Festival da MPBThese all link to no posts, only the following message:
Don’t see any posts under the tag you searched for? That’s because there are no posts with that tag yet; maybe you should write the first one…
Also, there are tags in my Reader I don’t recall ever using. But then I’ve got many sites which have been inactive for years.
Here are some unknown tags/categories in my Reader:
आलेख (Might have been a link to an video provider)
..What? (No idea)
1921+ (This looks like one I might have used on Songbook1.WordPress.com, but it’s not a present post category or tag on that site)
Brüste (means breast in German)
COURT METRAGE — (no idea; possibly from a site I created on the French film director François Truffaut)
Deprogram
Europeans Stop LendingI’ll stop there at “E.”

Thanks for the details musicdoc1. You may not see your posts in the tag searches in the Reader if they’re older. Posts are only in the reader for a few months. I think the exact number is somewhere around two months, so 60 days. Are you missing newer posts in the Reader? Can you link me to the posts so I can take a look?
As for the Reader tags, are you finding those in this section of the Reader:
Those are tags you’ve searched for before. If you don’t need them anymore, you can click on the X on the tags you don’t use anymore.

Some tags don’t link to anything but the message I’ve provided above. If the posts drop out of the Reader, why wouldn’t the related tags drop out at the same time?
Are you missing newer posts in the Reader?
I don’t know. I don’t use the Reader. My questions are about the many useless and unidentified tags. Some I have no recollection of ever using.

The Reader contains tags I’ve searched for before, not just tags I’ve used? And why does it contain post categories? I have never to my recollection searched for tags in the Reader. The tags I’m referring to appear in the left sidebar of the Blogs I Follow page, which is what opens when I click on the Reader icon.

Well, you can always search for a tag, whether anyone has used it or not. Or do you mean why don’t the links in the sidebar drop out? They’re saved searches, so we don’t check whether there are posts in the tag or not. We’re just saving your searches for future use.

In our tag searches, categories and tags function in basically the same way. When you search for a certain tag, we’ll include any posts that have that category as well.
Its possible these searches are a remnant from previous tag searches. You can just clear them with the X icon and they’ll go away.
Does that clarify things?
