The pin it button is JavaScript and can be used on WordPress.org installs but not on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/There are sharing icons you can enable including a Pinterest one to display at the bottom of your posts by following this guide. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/ When you use the Pinterest sharing button on a post, it opens up all images in that post, with the titles below them, so you can select which to pin, and there’s typically a pin for the post itself as well that shows the author Gravatar.
You can capture an image of a Pinterest icon and upload it, link to it and display it in a text widget. I have done this here in the text widget at the top of my sidebar for those who want to follow me on Pinterest.
For creating links in a text widget see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/text-widget-links/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/
NOTE http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/#adding-an-imageYou can upload image files by clicking the Add Media button right above the editing area of a page or a post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/
You can also upload new files to your Media Library using Media → Add New. http://support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-new

For troubleshooting see http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/troubleshooting-images/This support doc explains how to embed from Pinterest http://en.support.wordpress.com/embed-from-pinterest/
This one is for Pinterest site verification http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#pinterest-site-verification
NOTE: Be mindful that some people do not want their original images shared on internet bulletin boards and have copyright licenses that prohibit their sharing.

Is this something new? I had no problem pinning my posts less than a few weeks ago.
Thank you for your help!

I have the sharing button at the bottom of my posts but cannot share them on pinterest. Perhaps I wasn’t clear initially.
I have reviewed in part some of your other suggestions and to be honest, this is beyond my understanding. I am not a technical savvy person and was just hoping to continue being able to click once or twice to have my posts pinned to pinterest. Is this possible?
Thank you in advance!

I am having the same problem. And my pin it button is not hidden under a general Share button, which apparently was identified as creating an issue with pinning. Thanks for any additional help you might be able to provide!

If you are running in to this can you please let me know the specific posts it’s happening with?
@kiyaservices I just tried this on your site with this post and the Pinterest option worked great. It pulled up 4 images to choose from for pinning.

It was an issue that was persistent for about a week but I was persistent also and eventually it worked and seems to continue working. Thank you so much for the reply, Andrew!
