post vs. page?

i absolutely cannot figure out what the difference between a post and a page is. what am i missing?

A page is a seperate page where your info is held and a post automatically goes to the page you have on default.

so a page is sort of like a collection of posts, where you would presumably group by topic or date or something?

Yes, you can check mine out…my blog is scrapncraft. I knew it could be done, but didn’t get it done until earlier today. There are also widgets that can be added, and I believe you should set some of them up, as it makes most everything on the sidebar work much better together. Also, don’t forget to number the pages!

oh wow, this sounds complicated. this is my first day, so i pretty much have no idea what’s going on. i don’t even know what a widget it. and why is it so important to number the pages? thanks for being patient and helpful (=

A post is a dated posting that ages etc. IE it will show up on your main page and newer posts will show up above it moving older posts down and eventual into the archives. Pages on the other hand arn’t dated and don’t show up on the main page. You need to have a link to them somehow, most themes have built in ways to link to pages or you can use the pages widget in a sidebar.

Basicly this is how I see the difference.

Posts are for dated material, ie current events, news, what’s happening now.

Pages are for longer lived info, static things that don’t change and become old.

so when i make a post, does it automatically post to the mainpage? do i even have to have any pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

you don’t have to have pages, it has taken me a couple of months to figure out that I wantedd more out of my blog than just the basics!

  • Unknown's avatar

oh, yes it does automatically post to the main page

Posts and pages are two very different things. PAGES are for static content that you don’t intend to change. POSTS are for frequent entries you make, for example, on a daily basis.

You can also choose not to create any pages at all. Or if you do create pages then you can choose which “page” appears as you front page and change the settings to suit your preference. The default setting (if you do not change it) will display your most recent posts on the front page. But you can change this to suit yourself.

Suppose you want to change the page that is shown to your readers as your “front page” i.e. you want to change the “front page” from always displaying your most recent posts. This is how to do that.

dashboard -> options -> reading -> reading options -> front page -> front page displays

make your choices and then scroll down and click “update options”

    Happing blogging!
