Post Went Missing
-
I wrote an entry that would be scheduled for later in July and hit publish. It looked like it published correctly., but the entry has disappeared. Where did it go?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I have tried looking under ALL, under SCHEDULED and DRAFTS. There is no TRASH option right now. The two entries in question are not under either.

Hi there,
I’m sorry to say that the likelihood you can retrieve the posts is zero if you created it here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/If and only if a missing post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New then you can recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be. See here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/21/wordpress-recovering-a-lost-blog-post-or-page/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/But if it was created here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ there is no means of recovery as the auto-save is not functioning there.
Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New
The auto-save works there and the post will be Standard post format unless you change it.Do not create posts here > http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ where the auto-save is not working and where you are creating an Aside post format.

I created both entries using http://virtualschooling.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php – but I was not able to locate them using any of the means that you outlined in your blog. entry. As I mentioned, they aren’t under the TRASH, the DRAFT, or the SCHEDULED areas (and I discovered that they also aren’t under the PRIVATE area either.

One was entitled something like “EDTECH597 – Poll Entry: Will MOOCs Have An Impact On K-12 Education?” and the second was something to the effect of EDTECH597 – Image Entry: Cautious Does Not Mean Terrible”.
-
I should note that both had been saved in draft format as “EDTECH597 – Poll Entry: XXXXX” and “EDTECH597 – Image Entry: XXXXX” as placeholders for several days leading up to me actually circling back to write them. In both instances I would have also updated the URL field to reflect the new title. The Image Entry one was set to run at 10:00am on 22 July, while the Poll Entry one was set to run at 8:00pm on 25 July. Both would have been published yesterday (03 July). One around 1:00pm or 2:00pm (i.e., Image Entry one) and the other around 9:00pm (i.e., the Poll Entry one).

@ mkbnl, I took a look in our system and don’t see a record of the two posts you mentioned. However, I’m happy to keep looking if you can provide a little more clarification about these posts:
- Do you remember what date you started writing these drafts?
- Do you remember what date you hit the “Schedule” button to schedule these posts to be published? (In other words, the date you finished working on them.)
- You mention that these were set to run on July 22 and July 25, but that they would have been published on July 3. I’m not sure I understand — what exact do you mean by “set to run” here?
- Do you happen to remember what other posts you were working on at the same time as you were writing these two posts? I can take a look at posts you wrote around the same time and try to find these missing posts that way.
Thanks!

There have been several reports of scheduled posts vanishing lately. It seems wise, if you rely on scheduled posts frequently, to subscribe via email to your own blog, as sometimes posts that go missing did manage to go out on RSS but not post in the blog. That way you’ll have a copy.

I believe that I began writing the drafts on 30 June or 01 July (although it may have been earlier or even a day later). When I began writing the drafts, they would have been titled:
– EDTECH597 – Image Entry: XXXXX
[scheduled 22 July 2013 at 10:00am]
– EDTECH597 – Audio Entry: XXXXX
[scheduled 23 July 2013 at 8:00am]
– EDTECH597 – Video Entry: XXXXX
[scheduled 24 July 2013 at 8:00am]
– EDTECH597 – Poll Entry: XXXXX
[scheduled 25 July 2013 at 8:00am]Each would have been saved as a DRAFT on that first date (and continued to be saved as a draft until 03 July), but I would have hit the PUBLISH button to schedule them for the dates indicated in the [ ] above.
On 03 July, I was working on all four again – so I would have had all four entries open in separate tabs (along with the entry EDTECH597 – Week 7 [22 July 2013 at 8:00am], also open in a separate tab). I may have had more entries open in other tabs, but I know those five were all open.
Around 1:00pm or 2:00pm I would have hit PUBLISH on the Image Entry one (which I had renamed at this stage “EDTECH597 – Image Entry: Cautious Does Not Mean Terrible”). I would have hit PUBLISH on thePoll Entry one around 9:00pm (which I had renamed “EDTECH597 – Poll Entry: Will MOOCs Have An Impact On K-12 Education?”). I would have finished the Video Entry one about 30 minutes later (which I renamed “EDTECH597 – Video Entry: Mountain Heights Academy News Media”).
Within about ten minutes, when I refreshed my ALL POSTS page I noticed that of these four entries:
– EDTECH597 – Image Entry: Cautious Does Not Mean Terrible
[scheduled 22 July 2013 at 10:00am]
– EDTECH597 – Audio Entry: XXXXX
[scheduled 23 July 2013 at 8:00am]
– EDTECH597 – Video Entry: Video Entry: Mountain Heights Academy News Media
[scheduled 24 July 2013 at 8:00am]
– EDTECH597 – Poll Entry: Will MOOCs Have An Impact On K-12 Education?
[scheduled 25 July 2013 at 8:00am]The only one that was in my dashboard was “EDTECH597 – Video Entry: Video Entry: Mountain Heights Academy News Media”, but it was scheduled for 22 July 2013 at 10:00am. So a total of three entries disappeared (but one was only two or three sentences).
In all honesty, I can re-create the Poll Entry easy enough. It is the Image Entry I am most interested in, as that included a bit of substance that I really don’t want to have to remember – as I know the second time around will never be as good as what I first wrote.

Thank you for this additional information! The key piece of information is that you had all of these posts open in different browser tabs while you worked on them. Unfortunately, this can sometimes cause your posts to be overwritten by the other posts you have open at the same time.
Thankfully, those missing posts can be found if you take a look at the post revisions in your EDTECH597 – Video Entry post. Here’s a link to the post revisions for that post:
https://virtualschooling.wordpress.com/wp-admin/revision.php?revision=31288&action=edit
You can create a new post in your dashboard, and then copy and paste the text for the missing post from that revisions page into the new post. (Don’t click “Restore This Revision” or it will replace the Video Entry post with the other text.) If you’d like any help with this, please let me know.
In the future, I recommend only having one draft post open at a time. This will reduce the likelihood of any of your posts going missing. Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this!

Cool! I was able to get the ones that were missing!!!
But I have been blogging with WordPress for four or five years, almost always with multiple tabs open – and this is the first time that this has happened to me.

@mkbnl and timethief, you’re welcome! :)
The problem with this sort of glitch is that it doesn’t always pop up, but when it appears it seems to be related to switching between tabs with multiple drafts open. So you may be able to get away with keeping multiple tabs open most of the time, but it’s safer not to!
