Post width

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all.

How do i make the width of a written post in the editor, fit the post arear – width on the blog itself, and can i make it a default setting ?.

    Im using the rubric theme.

  • Unknown's avatar

You cannot: the post editor is a generic tool, designed to work regardless of the theme. And Rubric is not a fixed-width theme, so your question is meaningless anyway.

Thanks panaghiotisadam, but your answer didnt really help me at all, how do you guys make your written posts fit the post-whidth of the blog, is there a trick to this ?.

No, there’s no trick to it . .What I’ve found, if you want to call it a trick as such, is that in mine DIGG 3 column, I try and cut my paragraphs down to around 3 lines of text in the editor . . Then, when saved and published ( or viewed in the preview post) you’ll see ‘around 4-6 lines of text.

SO I know that if I don’t want a whole black of text in an area, I simply keep the lines in the editor to around the 3-4 mark.

I’ll add images to help break that up, and when you’re placing images, don’t be fooled by what you see in the editor, as this is not how it will turn out when it is svaed and viewed on-screen (in preview or published)

You’ll come to learn when to place images based on size and position (right left center or NONE . .

if you check out our site, you’ll see some images on the right, then two side by side inbetween paragraphs, this helps break it up, but looks sparse in the editor

It’s just a matter of getting used to knowing the editor is not EXACTLY a WYCIWYG style – most of the time.

The wordpress editor will wrap the text as it needs to when you are writing a post, and then when you publish the post, the theme will determine the wrap. It should all be automatic. Are you experiencing something else than that behavior?

Im sorry – i used to have the problem, that posts only went about half the way acros the post-arear on the blog page – when i wrote to the right edge of the editor, and then continiued under that line, if i wrote anyfurther than the right edge, i didnt know when to stop, to prevent the text from going outside the post-arear on the blog, i have now used the new dashboard / editor, and it works fine, its alot wider than the old editor was, so the text witdh in the editor fits better whith the theme im using, i just expected it all – whith the old editor, to work automaticly like “thesacredpath” writes – thanks “thesacredpath” – and “”boxoz360”.

PS. Im new at blogging, so maby its just me that dont know how to do things !.

Are you using Opera as your browser? What browser and version are you using? It’s a known problem with Opera.

Glad you sorted it . . if you can, try using FireFox 3 – including all new updates on it . . I use it specifically for the site, and use Safari and Netscape for other use to get news, info, scout things out etc etc. Leaving FF to do the work on the site, and not mess it’s cache or cookie storage up either.

Not sure of your computers resolution, so perhaps playing with that so you get a better res, and thus more screen real-estate, but not to high that causes to fine a type face naturally, and that may help u=you in seeing all of the editor and also managing the site a little easier ???!!!

Everyone is ‘new’ to blogging at one stage, and even though I’ve been at it for only around 24 months incl set up time prior to going ‘live’, I still consider myself a novice as there’s many a brilliant mind out there in the world of blogging, many only to happy to help fellow bloggers out when needed.

One of our team is a complete technophob. .and hates anything to do with anything bigger that forums . . Yet we’ve managed to get him inside the editor, putting up pics, doing some formatting and bringing is copy off Typepad and Word docs etc – so if he can do it, anyone can hehehehe

you are also using a “variable width” theme, which basically means it will never have the ‘same’ words across the scree on each different browser. It will depend entirely on the person viewing and their computer screen size, layout, resolution and how wide they have their default window set at.

Seeing that you have basically all text in your blog, I would suggest a “fixed width” themes, two column would probably work for you seeing that you aren’t using any widgets at the moment.

This way t=you will know ‘exactly’ what it will look like on anyone’s computer (within reason of course) You will have more control over where things lay on the page, and it will help you lay out the text in a better reading fashion.

There are a few things to remember when doing layout on blogs which is different to printed media. If you were to use a fixed width theme, then you could use those ‘rules’ and have you text displayed in a ‘constant’ style and readers will get to know that and understand it.

“xboxoz360” and “raincoaster”, im using the latest version of Firefox, always are, incl. all updates, at the moment its version 3.0.4, and “xboxoz360″, i have plenty of screen-realestate, i have an 24” Apple Imac, set to full screen-resolution 1920×1200. But as i said, i have yesterday tried out the new dashboard / editor, and there was no problem, the text fitted well whith the width of post-arear on the the blog itself, it seems to me, that the old editor was just too narrow – simple as that !, but as “thesacredpath” writes, it shuld, and you would expect it to, automaticly align everything by itself, but it didnt.

About fluid / variable vs. fixed width themes, i have never really known, exatly what the implications are whith the both, from the viewers point, but from what you, “xboxoz360” writes, i get it, that a “fluid” theme automaticly keeps the text “inside” the screen, no matter what the screen size is, whith no need to scroll horisontaly, is that right ?.

I have chosen the “Rubric” theme, because i like full-screen themes, and mostly – for the time being anyway, is doing this blogging for myself, not least, to learn how to “tame the beast” !.

Thank you all for your help – love the support-forum of WordPress :-)

Before i mark this thread “resolved”, would anybody care to answer the question in my post above:

Flexible-width themes stretch or shrink the text area when you horizontally resize the browser window; in fixed-width themes the width of the text area remains steady, and it’s the outside background area that changes.

In flexible-width themes it’s a bit more difficult to work out the arrangement of images in relation to text.
