Post without a title

My blog uses the Twenty Ten theme.

I made a post without a title, deliberately. On the right sidebar under “Recent Posts” a four-digit number appears (2295 as it happens to be) which links to the post. Is there a way to edit the “2295”? I wonder if it’s possible to insert a title but hide it in the body of the post but it will still show up on the sidebar which is what I desire.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Normally your post title forms the last part of your post’s URL, also referred to as the slug. As you didn’t give your post a title, the software assigned that number as the slug. You should be able to edit the slug from the post editor so it displays something different from the number: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/#post-title-and-permalink-url

But I would suggest you rather just add a title to your post, and then change your post format to Aside. The Aside post format doesn’t display a title on your blog but you still give it a title that will form part of the post slug and which will be listed in your recent posts widget. See here for changing the post format: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/#post-format

If you don’t see the Format module in the post editor, click on Screen Options at the top of the screen and make sure the relevant option is selected.

Thanks for your input, kokkieh. Neither worked. The slug is freely editable of course but the Recent Posts widget still shows 2295. In the case of the Aside format, the title shows up in the body just like as in Standard format.

  • You’re right, the Aside does show a title in single-post views.

To change the title in the Recent Posts widget it might work to unpublish the post (set it back to draft status and update), and then republish it without a title, but specify the slug beforehand.

I think the only way not to display the title on single-post views would be by adding CSS code to your site for which you’ll need an upgrade.
