Posted comment suddenly changed not by me

Hi. Somebody recently posted a comment on my blog, with a full name, email and URL to his own WP site. The comment looked related to my post, but I opted to wait a couple of days before I approved the comment, because his site felt “spammy” and I didn’t want him to suddenly come back posting spam comments once he got approved.

After two days I returned to my Comments section, and the dude’s email and URL disappeared; it’s now just his name and the comment. May I ask, did WordPress do this? Or could I be somehow hacked and those details got deleted by someone else?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Staff will require details to investigate this. I’ll tag this thread for them. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

    Thanks! I am subscribed.

    Hi Iris,

Commenters on your site are not able to edit their comments after they have been submitted, even if their comment is waiting approval. Where were the details posted in the comment? If they were in the body of the comment, the user should not have been able to remove them. However, if they were details on the left-hand side of the comment field, they can change that data by adjusting their user profile. I created a screenshot to demonstrate what I’m referring to:

    Comment Fields

Can you confirm where the details were located?

Yes, the changes happened on the left-hand side of the comment field. So the commenter probably just deleted (or hid) his email and blog URL from the profile?

    Sorry for the late response.

    Hi Iris,

After further investigation, it appears as though the user details are set when they initially submit the comment. So, even if they went back and adjusted their profile afterwards, their details would still be the same. I’m not entirely sure what happened to those fields. Although, I can assure you that your blog doesn’t look like it was hacked and the comment was not edited by a WordPress.com staff member. Have you noticed this happening again since the original report?

No, I haven’t noticed that it happened again after that one incident. But some users seem to be now leaving comments with just their names, no emails or URLs. (I haven’t seen that before, but lately seems common.) Don’t know if it’s related.

    Hi!

I don’t believe that is directly related. I scanned through the comments on your blog since the beginning of April, and all of your visitors look like they’ve left their email address:

    https://sheisiris.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php

Your current settings force users to fill out their name and email address before commenting so you should see that data. If you would like, you could require users to log-in through WordPress.com before they comment using the option here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings

However, that means that users without a WordPress.com account would first need to create one before commenting.
