Posterous import still showing "Processing…" 3-4 days later.

I started my posterous import three or four days ago, and it’s still displaying “Processing…” The page there told me to contact support if it stayed that way for more than 24 hours, so I’m doing so now. Why is it taking so long?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sometimes the import will hang up – I flagged this for the staff to reset the import and help you

  • Hi James,

So I’ve stopped the previous import. Can you export your Posterous blog into an XML file and try importing it that way? I’ve seen users have success with breaking the file up into smaller pieces if there is a lot of content, so you may want to try that.

When you run the import with the XML file, you’ll want to use the WordPress option:

I just tried using the “WordPress” option with the posterous exported XML file, and 24 hours later it’s still hung on the same “processing” screen. I used the file “wordpress_export_1.xml” that comes in the posterous export zip directory, and it’s 6.6 MB.

I already tried the “wordpress” option on my self-hosted blog, and got a ton of “failed to import” messages, so I assumed posterous’s export file is in the wrong format for wordpress.

Last time (when I posted this thread) I tried using the “posterous” option, so neither one seems to be working for me.

What should I try next? I appreciate your help in working with me.

I just registered for a new blog (I have about 20 of these to import), and tried importing one of the smaller 1-2MB XML files. About 30 minutes later I get an “[WordPress.com] Import successful” email, but when I log into the blog I see:

    Content
    0 Posts
    1 Page
    1 Category
    0 Tags
    Discussion
    0 Comments
    0 Approved
    0 Pending
    0 Spam

I don’t think posterous’s export tool is in the right format for wordpress.

Won’t let me edit my post. The second blog is http://duffxcom1.wordpress.com/ if that matters. Now I’m trying the “posterous import” setting on that blog with the smaller (1-2mb) posterous account to see if that works.

Ok, well the new account I registered seems to be able to import blogs just fine using the “posterous” option. Some of them require more than one try.

Now the problem is, all of the imported comments are “anonymous” – it doesn’t preserve the comment author’s name and URL. Has anyone found a fix for this yet? Googling turns up nothing.

  • Hi there,

I’ll take a closer look – I’m sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime!

    Cheers!

I am having the same problem.. I will follow this thread.

  • Now the problem is, all of the imported comments are “anonymous” – it doesn’t preserve the comment author’s name and URL.

There is known bug in the Posterous export file which displays Anonymous when the commenter is also the post author – our developers are contacting Posterous to let them know.

Could you please clarify whether Anonymous is being displayed on all comments, or only when the commenter is the same person as the post author?

Could you please link to a sample post or two so I can take a look?

    Hi Kathryn,

Original post author here – I registered a new account before I realized one user could have multiple blogs.

I ended up creating another thread since I thought the anonymous comments were a different issue from the original post title: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/posterous-import-comments-are-anonymous?replies=8#post-1163528

I think it’s easiest if we continue the discussion there, since the problems I described in this thread no longer apply (this was when WordPress was importing using a posterous name and password, not the XML file). Import seems to be working fine now, just 1) post author’s comments are anonymous, 2) commenter’s URLs aren’t imported, and 3) foreign language characters are displaying as question marks. You can close this thread if you like.

  • Perfect – I’ve already replied there.
