Posting Formatting

    Can someone please help?

I’ve been writing blogs here for a while now, and this problem just started.

I type my posts into the WordPress Visual editor. Whenever I want a space between paragraphs I hit return once or twice. When I publish the post it scrunches everything together.

    Please help.

Are you using Safari? TinyMCE editor that wordpress uses for writing pages and posts is not fully compatible with Safari.

I would suggest downloading the Firefox or Camino browsers to use with wordpress as they are the most compatible with wordpress.

Alternately, you can go to “my profile” in your dashboard and uncheck “use visual rich text editor” and then you will be doing all your writing in code view. Some, including myself, find this a little confusing since in addition to the text of your post, you will see all the html code for your formatting. Since there are other problems with Safari and wordpress as well, the best solution is to download one of the other browsers I mentioned above.

WordPress.com will always strip out any extra Enters that you make between paragraphs if you use the Visual editor. The only way to preserve these spaces is to write it in code.

This just started happen to me this week as well (using Safari). It was never a problem before. Any answers or insights would be appreciated.

Safari and TinyMCE have never played nice together and if you haven’t had any problems before, then you have been lucky. When using the visual rich text editor, it will always (in my experience) strip out the extra line between paragraphs, and many others have reported the same problem (among others).

Hopefully the TinyMCE folks will work on getting their editor to work with Safari, but in the meantime as I have suggested and download Firefox to use when blogging.

Try going into the code tab and putting < p > at the beginning of the paragraph and < /p > at the end. (Remove the spaces) I think that is the proper code.

    @vivian
In my experience, they are stripped out once you press the save or save and continue editing buttons and it goes back to the visual editor.

The only way to use Safari is to turn off the visual editor and do everything in code view (confusing for most since they can’t see what they are going to get unless the preview it). With the visual rich editor off, the blank lines will remain.

So you’re saying that on Firefox the visual editor never strips the <p>’s?

Its just really annoying to type those all in, and when editing the post, I have to do it all over again.

Yes, firefox and the TinyMCE editor are friends and I’ve never had it strip out a paragraph break or anything like that.

hi: I added widgets, and now have the same problem again…..lots of empty space at the column on right and now the words are off the template..how do i pull them in…..I can’t find my way back here,,,

This sounds like an unrelated issue, so please start a new thread for it. And when you do, please put a link to your blog so we can look at it, including the http part of the URL.

I noticed in your latest post one that was running over onto the widget area. Open that post like you were going to edit it, select all the text, copy it to the clipboard (crtl-a windows or cmd-a mac) and then hit the delete key. Click on the advanced toolbar button (at the right end of the editor toolbar (looks like a bunch of dots in a square) and then in the lower section of the toolbar that appears, click on the little icon with the square and the “W” in it. A window will open. Place your cursor in that window, and then paste the all the text you copied to the clipboard in there and then click “insert.” You might have to do a little reformatting, but this should take care of the problem for you.

I edited the last four posts the way you asked me to…it did not work. So I deleted the last four posts….I still have the problems

How do I get my Avatar (picture) back on the front page

  • Unknown's avatar

Every blog has a default display. As soon as you move a single widget here -> Presentation -> Widgets that default display disappears. It is overridden by the choices that you make when it comes to widgets that you want to use.

If you want the About blurb back then you have two choices you can make.

    (1) Take all the widgets out of your sidebar and be satisfied with never adding another one so the deafault display is not changed.

    (2) Upload the avatar into a text widget. Then copy the biographical “About” text from the “Your Profile” page into the text widget as well.

P.S.I already gave you the links for this in another thread you posted to today

    timethief…thanks a bunch…OK! i got it…

    @moinansari

now to my main format problem. My format is screwed up again. I did delte al lthe 4 articles that I had added…but still the problem remains.

As I said earlier, you will have to create one using a text widget. This FAQ explains the process very nicely: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/put-an-image-in-your-sidebar/

I’m glad you understood my explanation.
    Is this your blog? http://moinansari.wordpress.com/
If so, I do not see a format problem using firefox 2.0.0.11or IE7.
Which browser and version of it are your using?
If it’s either Safari or IE6 then they are problematic.

    timetheif. I have IE 6

It was just fine….and then the text is now showing to the left off the template.

I had the same problem earlier and thesacredpath told me to fix a formatting error in my post. Once I reformatted that line…it fixed the probelm…now I have it again….

Becuase most of the poeple will be using IE 6 I want the error issue resolved

Temporarily, try removing the sonific widget from your sidebar. I noticed it was hanging off the right edge of the sidebar (too wide) and it may also cause this problem.
