posting of word files with tables

Is there any eta on when the word formatting transfer problem will be fixed?

It’s still having the same problem as before.

Take a look at the Blogger/Blogspot visual editor, and note how their text-pasting button works. According to my wife (who uses Blogger), the paste strips out all formatting except for the basics (italic, bold, links, blockquotes, bulleted and numbered lists, and paragraphs). She thinks that the text-pasting routine Blogger uses is available for purchase so that WordPress could easily switch.

What WordPress has now is unusable in practice, and the workarounds are laborious and tedious. Please fix forthwith.

@jackiedana – I am using Safari on a Mac. I just tested it in Firefox as well as Chrome. Bold/italics stay in Safari and Firefox, but not Chrome. None of the other formatting stays no matter what browser I am in.

    Progress, perhaps?

Apparently Firefox has a pretty onery cache that makes pasting from Word problematic. For those using Windows, please try clearing your cache using Ctrl+shift+del (not just shift + reload page).

In my own test, clearing my Firefox cache in this way allowed the formatting to transfer from Word to my WordPress.com test post.

For users with other browsers, please try clearing the cache as well to see if that helps, and let me know:

Was able to copy from Word tonight – formatting remained intact – spacing, bold, Italics, and hyperlinks – when copying from Word to Firefox on Windows 8.

Thanks for your progress with this to get it back to where it used to be. It was working fine before, didn’t see the need for a fix.

That’s great to hear. Did you clear your Firefox cache to get it to work, or did it start working for you on its own?

  • Unknown's avatar

Still doesn’t work while using Firefox for me. I tried it last night, too.

    Using Win 8.1, OpenOfficeWriter, Firefox:
    All formatting lost
(ctrl+shift+del would delete the chronic; therefore not applied)

The ctrl+shift+del option in Firefox on Windows has helped several users. If you don’t wish to use that option, I would recommend clearing your Firefox cache manually and also possibly deleting WordPress.com cookies to see if that helps.

    Now, it seems to work.
    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s great! I’m glad that’s working for you.

I tried the table paste today and it worked 99.9%. The only format line that didn’t transfer was the first line <table border=”1″ cellspacing=”3″ cellpadding=”0″> which came through as simply <table>. I copied that line from a prior posting and all is well. I didn’t try bold, italics, underline or links as I had already fixed those items.

    Two complaints remaining:
    1. The description for the Text/Plain Text toggle switch – it’s unclear to me which mode it’s in.
    2. PHOTO SLIDESHOW – shows as thumbnails in Text Editor, although displays properly in Preview.

The image issues are being addressed in a separate thread, but the way images are displayed in the editor has been brought up to our developers.

As for the toggle, the way it works is that you have to turn on Plain Text mode for each post/page. It is “on” when the icon is dark and there’s a box around it; the toggle is in “off” mode when the icon is grey and there is no outline. We may tweak that further in the future based on feedback from users.

If the default when you enter the Editor is Rich Text, then how about the little pop-up label saying “Paste as Plain Text” rather than “Paste as Text.”
I find the “Paste as Text” confusing because, to me, it’s text both ways. Whether its Plain or Rich is the difference.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve passed it along to our developers.

Ok, so it still isn’t working for me, but I found a (time-intensive) workaround. Unfortunately it means adding back in the coding for each post.

Say I want a paragraph in Georgia 13px, I have to add this before the paragraph:

    <p style=”margin: 0; font-size: 13px; line-height: normal; font-family: Georgia;”>

…and then add things like this again any time I want a paragraph break a certain size, or change the font size within the post, etc. I mean, it worked, but before these kinds of coding things just stayed on their own when I dragged my post in from TextEdit (Mac program). I am currently unable to drag text into the draft anymore. The whole draft thing just lights up blue and says ‘drop files to upload’, but nothing uploads when I try to drop it.

  • Unknown's avatar

And just to let anyone else know, I am using the text editor on the draft rather than visual editor when I am adding in all that code stuff. I checked a previous post of mine from before the changes to match the code back up to what I wanted the post to look like (I don’t usually work with codes).

And the two comments above are exactly why this must be fixed. It is BADLY broken from a usability standpoint. It is not good design to make routine tasks this troublesome. Think about it and match capabilities to user requirements, not do whatever’s easiest to program. Just a thought.

Here to report that the bug is still in place. When copying from Word to Firefox on Windows 8, no formatting is preserved. This includes bold/italics, and simply spacing between paragraphs. Nothing is preserved whatsoever, and clearing the Firefox cache and cookies has no effect.

@4gravitonsandagradstudent I’m sorry to hear that it’s not working for you. What version of Firefox and MS Word are you using? Did you try the ctrl+shift+del key command in Firefox to flush the cache?
