Hi there!
You can use the Image block to insert an image. After inserting the image, you can look at the Link settings to link the image to the “Media file”. When clicked, the full image file will open.
Please give it a try by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#link-settings
Let us know if you have more questions.

Hi there, after you insert an image in your post, you can click on the image you just inserted and then the Link button in the toolbar to select Media File or Attachment Page.
If you are using the Classic Editor, click on the image after you’ve inserted it, then click the pencil icon that appears above the image. That will open an Image Details window where you can choose what to link to under Display Settings>Link to:
Post back here if you have other questions about this.

I did as you said put the image on my post, clicked on the link button which said edit link, that led me to media file, I clicked again which brought up another copy of my image but didn’t enable me to enlarge the image. I am afraid your reply was no help to me. Did I misunderstand what to do?

Hello there,
It looks like you did the correct thing there.
I’ve changed the first image block to a gallery block here: https://susanpoozan.wordpress.com/2021/10/02/london-battersea-a-coffee-outing/
When clicked, it opens in what is known as a lightbox – is this what you’re trying to do?

Hello again, Looking at that same post that @aleone89 mentioned, the original Media files you’ve linked to aren’t much larger than what is shown in the post content column itself.
Your images won’t display larger than what you’ve uploaded. They display in the post content column for your theme (Twenty-Ten) at 640×480 pixels The second image in your post https://susanpoozan.files.wordpress.com/2021/09/20210824_132445.jpg is 800×600 pixels and that’s what I see when clicking to see an “enlarged” image. The only exception I could find in that post was this image of the flowered arch. https://susanpoozan.files.wordpress.com/2021/09/20210824_132445.jpg which comes in at 4128×3096 pixels
So if you want your site visitors to click to see an “enlarged” image, you need to upload larger images to begin with. They don’t need to be 4000+ pixels wide, but certainly 1200 or 1600 pixels wide would give you better results.
Hope that helped explain things better.
