posting title still a dilemma
-
I want to be able to bypass the title box when writing a post. I prefer to format the title myself and so far haven’t found a way to do that inside the title box. My dilemma is that my posts then go out untitled and show up that way in places like blog catalogue.
It was suggested that I try editing the permalink but that hasn’t fixed things. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks.
Dan

Here at wordpress.com the post and page title fields do not accept HTML. The formatting of the title is handled in the CSS, typically as h3.

What do you mean by formatting? Font size and type? Extra line breaks? I’m afraid you would need the CSS Upgrade for that.

Thanks sacredpath and husdal. By formatting the title I mean font size and color. I have not used CSS before. How difficult would it be to create my post titles with it?

Just so you know: that title box is where search engines look first. If you do not use it, but format your title within the post, you are going to take a huge hit in the Google Juice. That may or may not matter to you, but it will very definitely change how high you rank in search engines.
With the upgrade and a firm knowledge of CSS you can do virtually anything with your titles while still retaining the above GoogleJuice. You can’t change them to be different for every post, but you can change them on all posts to be anything you want.

Thanks raincoaster. I guess I’m worried about adding CSS and then finding it a challenge to figure out how to use it. Is there a “CSS for Dummies” or something similar you could recommend?
Thanks.

Before you take on learning CSS, understand that you won’t be able to change the titles of each individual post. With CSS, you can set the font and color of all titles but not the individual titles. I notice that you have some blue titles, some purple titles, some red titles – CSS isn’t going to allow that to happen. You could make them all blue or all red or all purple with CSS, though.

Also, since you seem to be using a static front page, be aware that you are losing Google juice, anyway. The search engines are designed to look at the front page for blog posts.

Thanks sacredpath and vivianpage for all the good advice. I wanted to create a website/blog combo which accounts for the static front page. Maybe I need to rethink that.
I was pleased that yesterday my site came up on page one, 6 listings down when I googled Dan Curtis. And when I googled personal historian I show up on page 2, 4 listings down. I have been posting about 2 or 3 times a week and have started commenting on some related sites.I also signed up with technorati and blog catalogue which may have helped.
