    Blogs have only one page for posts that will automatically update after each new post is published and place that post on top.

    You can create as many static pages as you like but every one of them will require editing in order to add new information to it. You can even assign another page as your static front page and cripple your blog so it gets no backlinks, next to no Google juice, and compromise its ability to achieve a PageRank by making you blog into a mock website if you so choose.

    The vast and overwhelming amount of Google juice goes to posts because that’s the way blogs are designed and how they function. The most Google juice of all goes to the front page of a blog, because blogs are structured in reverse chronological order, and search engines are programmed to locate dynamic content on the front page. Change that and you have upset the applecart, so to speak.

    (1) Blogs provide for inline commenting as they are aimed at engaging readers in discussion – websites don’t;

    (2) Blogs have RSS feeds so subscribers can be immediately updated following publication of new posts – websites don’t;

    (3) Blogs have Google juice and PageRanks – websites don’t .

    The reason so many businesses are embedding blogs into their wordpress.org installs is to take advantage of those three differences (and others). Many “bloggers” are setting up their blogs to emulate websites by creating static front pages and reordering their blogs to rely on a static Page structure. Well, that results in defeating the purposes of having a blog. Pages cannot have categories and tags assigned to them and they have very little Google juice. I have discovered that many of the folks doing this have no clue as to what the affects of their restructuring has including disabling their blog’s ability to achieve any Google juice flowing in or out, and disabling their blog’s ability to achieve a PageRank.

    So the bottom line is that if you want a mock website you can structure one. In the Invove theme and in the Monotone theme you can choose to use the feature that allows you to place Categories across the top menu where static Pages are normally found. In other themes there is a “trick” that ca be used to achieve the same thing http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/ But you cannot change the fact that only one page for posts will automatically update when you publish a new post.

    So please let us know whether or not you care about backlinks, Google juice and PageRank and then we will answer your questions in accord with
    the answer you provide.

    Sorry the bold lettering above in the last paragraph was unintentional. I left a strong tag open. :(

    What you’re looking for is the job of post categories, not (static) pages. Just file the relevant posts under a “Media” category, plus add the Categories widget to your sidebar.

    Or set your theme to display categories instead of pages in the header, and add the Pages widget to your sidebar.
