Posting to Pages

I have separate pages on my blog and have noticed people hardly ever visit them. They seem to prefer reading and commenting on posts that I have posted uncategorised.

Can anyone explain the functions of posting to separate pages?

For example I have a separate page for my novel and have found no traffic visiting there but yet if I post articles about my novel in uncategorised they are seen and commented on.

I have also noticed that if I post an article in uncategorised and leave it there for a few days I tend to get more visitors than if I posted it to a category.
Can anyone explain this or tell me where I am going wrong?

    Thank you
    Phoenix

    Hi Phoenix,

Can anyone explain the functions of posting to separate pages?

You might be confused about the differences between static pages and dynamic archives pages such as category pages. When you say, “I have separate pages on my blog and have noticed people hardly ever visit them,” it’s not clear whether you are referring to static pages such as those linked to in your header menu, or category pages which you’ve links to in the categories widget in the sidebar.

Can anyone explain the functions of posting to separate pages?

First of all, you can’t post to a static page. Second, all posts are published to one page, the posts or blog page. I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “posting to separate pages,” but I presume you are referring to the practice of assigning categories to posts. Technically, this isn’t posting to various pages. What is does is allow you to organize post archives into various categories. People often include links to category pages in custom menus.

I have a separate page for my novel and have found no traffic visiting there…

Are you referring to the page “Second Chances — my debut novel”
(https://phoenixrainez.wordpress.com/second-chances/second-chances-2/)? Part of the answer might lie in the facts that pages have no categories, tags, or date. Some people like to search by tag (in the Reader) for posts on WordPress.com websites. Part of the answer might be that perhaps Google and other search engines deem your “Second Chances” page redundant since much of the same information and more can be found in the various posts in your “Second Chances” category page. You might consider linking to the category page in a custom menu rather than to the static page of the same title in the default pages menu.

I don’t have a concise explanation for your observation that uncategorized posts sometimes tend to get more visitors and comments than those with categories assigned, but it doesn’t surprise me. A lot of factors other than categories may be involved in the relative popularity of, and comment activity on, posts.

    Regards,
