  It seems like you might be facing difficulties with a self-hosted WordPress.org website, and not with a WordPress.com-hosted one. WordPress.org is a free site-engine software, while WordPress.com is a web hosting company.   What we use on WordPress.com is Jetpack Akismet, you can purchase it for your site as well: https://jetpack.com/upgrade/anti-spam/.
