Posts and sidebars missing

In the last couple of days I’ve got a problem I can’t figure out. When I go to my blog address, my latest post appears, and then, below it, a post from June of last year — every post I’ve made in between is missing, as are all the widgets in the sidebar area of my blog. All the ‘missing’ posts still exist and I can link to them individually, and if I go to the ‘Widgets’ menu I can see all those things are still there, but they no longer display on the main page when I go to the blog.

I just tried switching themes (was using Yoko, switched to Twenty Eleven) to see if that would fix it, but while everything looked fine in the preview of the new theme, when I actually switched the same display problems occurred.

Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Just adding … the blog appears this way on my laptop and my iPad, but on my iPhone all the posts display properly.

Posting here to bump this up again … is there a step I’m missing about how to get a question seen/answered? After 12 successful years with several WordPress sites this is the first problem I’ve encountered that I haven’t either been able to fix myself, or been able to get help quickly with. Is there anything more I can do?

  • Hi there!

This is odd indeed. I tried to change what’s displayed on your homepage temporarily to see if it fixed it, but no luck.
When disabling Infinite Scroll, it seems to work, but there’s still something off with the posts formating.

Would you try temporarily activating another (more modern) theme and see if that changes anything? Twenty Eleven is from 10 years ago, so it may be causing some issues. Try Twenty Twenty One, for example.

You can also try other themes without activating them by clicking on the three dots next to the theme’s name and choosing the option Try&Customize.

This will allow you to see how the theme would look like with your content and how you could customize it.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks! Right now I’m running Twenty Sixteen and it hasn’t helped. I’ll try a couple of others.

BTW sorry for making a duplicate post — I’ll delete that — I had clicked to get email notification of replies and didn’t get any, so I thought this post had gone unseen. I’ll check back to this post for further replies.

  • I’ve been rechecking this together with my colleague. He cleared your site’s cache, but it coincided with you changing your theme to Twenty Twenty One.
So I’m not sure which of those two things actually fixed the issue, but it looks like the posts are displayed correctly now. Can you confirm?

I think something must have broken while you were still using Yoko – it was an old theme that was already retired, and it might have been fixed by clearing the site’s cache.
I’d still strongly recommend sticking to newer themes, to be sure nothing like that would happen again :).

Thanks! I have been playing around with a bunch of different themes to see which works best — there were definitely some on which the problem of the missing posts occurred, but others (probably the newer themes?) where it did not. Right now Twenty Seventeen seems to be working really well and everything is displaying properly on it — hope that is “new” enough. Really appreciate the help.

One more question: Do themes get retired very quickly? I have another WordPress site (notthefoggiestclue.wordpress.com) that I just set up last month which is working really well using a theme called Hemingway Revisited, so I thought I would try that same theme while I was experimenting with different themes for the blog, but couldn’t find it in the list of possible themes. Would that be one that’s not available? Just curious how it works. As I said, Twenty Seventeen seems to be working OK for the blog at the moment.

  • I believe you mean https://wordpress.com/theme/hemingway-rewritten

    “Rewritten,” not “revisited.” :)

Ah! But I was searching for “Hemingway” and still couldn’t find it, so I obviously don’t know the best way to find themes. Glad to know it’s still available though; that’s a really great theme.

  • That’s odd, I got that link by searching for “hemingway.”

Glad it’s working now though! :)
