Posts are dated by draft date, not published date
-
In the last few months, WordPress has been listing my posts as published on the date that I first started writing them, and not on the date they were actually published. I first noticed this on the Stats page, but it’s true of the publication dates on the posts themselves as well. Is this a known glitch?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sure. Here’s the latest one: https://4gravitons.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/journalists-are-terrible-at-quasiparticles/

Everything in our logs say that was published July 23. Are you saying it published with a different date?
-
The post was published on July 24. I wrote it (and previewed it) on July 23, but it definitely wasn’t published until July 24.

Have you set your timezone correctly?
The default timezone is UTC time. You can confirm or reset your timezone here > Settings > General. There you select the closest city to you in the same timezone in the drop-down menu and then click “save changes”.
If you are logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog this is what you see here

Yes, that should be the correct time zone. (By the way, I’ll have to dig around, but I’m pretty sure there are several posts that have timestamps more than a day off, because I started writing them more than a day in advance, so regardless it’s not the time zone’s fault.)
-
-
Yeah, while I’m not completely sure about it because I can’t figure out how to check the day-by-day stats that far back, there’s a post listed as published on May 20 that was most likely actually published on May 22. If you want to make sure, there should be a bunch of views of the post on May 22, and none on May 20-21.
-
Ok, the next time you publish a post, if it’s wrong, please reply here immediately and we’ll work off the timezone on the reply here to see what’s getting out of sync.

Strangely enough, today’s post was published with the correct date. I guess I’ll check again next week to see if the problem resurfaces.

The problem is back with today’s post, up just a few minutes ago but labeled with August 5: https://4gravitons.wordpress.com/2015/08/05/historic-montreal/
I didn’t preview last week’s post before publishing, while I did preview this week’s yesterday. Could that be causing the problem?
-
Hi there,
That could be part of what’s causing this bug — thanks for mentioning that detail!
Can you walk me through the exact steps you took to publish that post? (The link where you started, what you clicked on, etc.) That will help me investigate this further for you!
-
To draft the post, I went to My Sites->Blog Posts (Add), clicking the Add button. When finished, I saved it with the Save Draft button. To preview the post, I went to Blog Posts, clicked on Drafts, then clicked the Preview link on the draft. To publish, I went to Blog Posts, clicked on Drafts, then clicked on the Publish link.

Hi there,
Thank you so much for those details! We have had some other reports of this problem, but we were never able to reproduce it on our end and so we were having trouble tracking down the cause. I just reproduced the problem using the steps you mentioned — that information will help our team work toward resolving the problem, so truly, thank you for reporting this issue. :)
For now, please try these steps when you publish your drafts:
- Go to Blog Posts and click on Drafts
- Click the Edit link to open the draft in the editor again
- Click the Publish button in the editor to publish it
In my tests, that worked to set the post to the current date and time. You can also try saving the draft one more time before publishing it, and/or deliberately changing the status of the post to Publish Immediately in the editor before you hit the Publish button.
If those workarounds don’t work for you, please let me know! I’ll also pass along this information to our team so we can try to squash the bug that’s causing this problem. :)
