Posts don’t finish saving in Block Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

My ‘Quote of the Day’ posts do not finish saving (status shows throbbing ‘Saving’) even after prolonged waits. This is the same for ‘Update,’ ‘Save As Draft,’ or ‘Schedule.’ I have not tried with ‘Publish.’

The posts have HTML and save correctly with the Classic Editor. I use the same format and publish one daily.

    Sample posts:

  • Hi there,

It looks like you are using Google Chrome as your browser, so with this in mind I would like you to try the following:

    – clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050
    – Also make sure you are not blocking any “3rd party cookies” as explained in that guide as well.
    – If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Chrome?

    Thanks for the additional info!

I have tried it with a clean version of Chromium (89.0.4389.90) with all history & cache cleared, third party cookies allowed and the save still does not complete.

I have tried it with Firefox (87.0, cache empty, third party allowed) and, likewise, the save does not complete.

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for that confirmation.

I was able to replicate that issue, and it looks like it’s something we’re aware of here: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/50333

At least, I’m seeing seeing the same error in the console.

Block validation: Block validation failed for core/group

Are you able to tell me how you’re creating content, to help us triage this further please. For example, are you creating content outside of WordPress.com and pasting it in?

    Many thanks in advance.

I am copying and pasting older posts. I update the href, the img and the quote itself.

Related? – I have just remembered that I am now doing a manual copy paste between posts because the copy function stopped working for these posts a few months ago.

    Sample post:

We are not idealized wild things. We are imperfect mortal beings, aware of that mortality even as we push it away, failed by our very complication, so wired that when we mourn our losses we also mourn, for better or for worse, ourselves. As we were. As we are no longer. As we will one day not be at all.

  • Hello there,

Ok thank you, that’s very useful information.

Can you tell me the name of the post you’re copying from please so that we can take a closer look?

Also, can you confirm if this occurs if writing in the editor directly, without copying and pasting please.

    Many thanks in advance.

The sample post is a scheduled post:

    Quote of the Day

A published post with the same format is:

    Quote of the Day

I have not tried writing this type of post in the block editor directly though I have prepared a couple of prose posts which saved without a problem.

Rereading your question, I see I should have mentioned that I copy the “quote” from the previous day’s quote, e.g.: …3659 was created from …3658.

  • Have you tried copying and pasting from the code editor, rather than the visual editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

I copy from the classic editor in text mode to the block editor in code editor mode. I do very little editing in visual mode.

  • Ah, that might not translate very well since blocks add extra code.

Can you try using a classic block, choosing to edit the HTML, and then pasting your HTML over?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have tried starting a post via Visual Block Editor. I inserted the image using an image block and copied, in visual mode, the text to a classic block. It introduced extra code around the image, however it still did not complete saving.

    The post (scheduled) is:

    Quote of the Day

FYI: I tried saving the post without changing the HTML and it didn’t work. I customized the HTML in the classic editor after the unsuccessful attempt.

  • Hi there,

It introduced extra code around the image, however it still did not complete saving.

I did not see any code in the post https://yahooeysblog.wordpress.com/2021/03/30/quote-of-the-day-3662/ so I may be a bit confused. To clarify, once you edited the HTML you were successfully able to save and schedule your post?

This is a little tough to catch on our end so possibly you can take a screenshot of the view you have (including the extra code) from when you first complete your paste operation? To share a screenshot with us, you can upload it to the Media Library on your site, and then copy the image URL. You can see a video of how to do this here: https://d.pr/v/Fcnerp

Once you have the image URL just paste it into your reply and we will be able to see your screenshot, thanks!

To clarify, I have NOT been able save and schedule my post using the Block Editor. The post is saved, but the “process” does not complete within the Block Editor. I have “throbbing” Saving and I have to click on “Leave” (see https://yahooeysblog.files.wordpress.com/2021/03/screenshot-from-2021-03-29-23-42-55.png). The post is however saved. I then open the post in the Classic Editor to complete preparing it.

Following are the screenshots of my preparing a post using ONLY the Visual Block Editor:

Following are two screenshots showing the code (untouched by me) and taken after I had already clicked Save Draft. I have highlighted the “extra code,” i.e.: code that I was not adding when preparing my posts 100% manually in the Code Editor:

Please note that I have since modified the post and scheduled it.

  • Thanks. Yeah that extra code goes with the block editor and blocks won’t save properly without it.

Would you be willing to try setting up a new “template” for this in the block editor? Just start with a fresh post, add the tags you want, the image, the text…. and then save that as a draft. You can copy that from here:
    https://wordpress.com/posts

Then you’d just replace the image (click on it, pick a new image) and text in each post.

Even if you don’t want to use that, can you verify whether the problem is resolved if you’re not hand-editing the code or pasting old code into the newer editor?

I did not create a template. I am getting the impression you are suggesting a work around. I have a functional work around – use the classic editor. The problem is that the Block Editor is not completing the save cycle.

I have created with zero copy pasting and zero html editing. It still does not save correctly. FYI: I have since edited the post and scheduled it.

I then tried a “naked” post and I would suggest it may be the title of my post that is generating the error. I am at more than 3,660 posts called “Quote of the Day” and my other posts save correctly.

Following is a screenshot of the post as prepared and with “Save Draft” clicked:

Following is a screenshot of the post’s code:

Following is the screenshot of the “naked” post:

I tested my hypothesis and was able to successfully save a “Quote” style post by giving it another name.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for that additional information, it’s helped us carrying out some further triaging of this issue.

There is definitely an issue here, and we’re at a point where we need to know the exact steps you’re taking when it comes to creating post, specifically the quotation posts.

Can you tell us every step from signing into WordPress.com to creating the post please?

The reason why I ask for this is because it looks like a post ID is not being appended to the post, as it should, and this looks like it could be a major factor here.

Ideally the post slug should be quote-of-the-day-3666

When I add -3666 to the slug, with the “Quote of the Day” title, it does save, but the save completes after a refresh.

Without it, and with the “Quote of the Day” title – it doesn’t complete at all.

With a different title altogether, (which has the potential to change the slug being saved to) it saves as expected.

I know telling us specific details maybe going over old ground in places, but this will really help us to pin down the anomaly with this specific issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hello,

I have recorded (Vimeo) the minimum steps to recreate the issue and embedded the video in the resulting Draft:
    https://yahooeysblog.wordpress.com/2021/04/08/quote-of-the-day-3668/

  • Is it okay if we share the direct link to the video in this bug report?
    https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/50333

Also, someone had asked if this can be reproduced “from scratch” which is what I was asking about earlier: if you start with a fresh template do you run into the same issue?
