Posts: Edit: categories hierarchy is not retained, out of order
-
Have created categories with sub-categories and all looks fine in the dashboard under Posts -> Categories section and on the blog with the categories widget. However, when editing a post the categories hierarchy is not retained, they are out of order and it’s impossible to tell what’s what.
Why are the categories not showing in their assigned hierarchy order in edit post?
Also in the Post -> Categories screen it says 9 items yet the list on the right only shows 8, but in the dropdown when creating new or editing a category there is a 9th that I can see to get rid of it.

That hierarchy in the edit posts screen is just alphabetical.
The order that you set is only represented in the widget and other front-facing category lists.

Thanks macmanx. Is there a way to fix this? It’s way too confusing when there are a lot of categories and sub-categories. Makes using categories pretty much useless. Users would have to know what sub-category goes with what category, and when there are sub-categories that are the same across high-level categories it’s even worse, there’s no way to know which one you’re assigning.
Also in the Post -> Categories screen it says 9 items yet the list on the right only shows 8, but in the dropdown when creating new or editing a category there is a 9th that I can see to get rid of it. This has to be a bug, how does that get fixed?

Your parent categories should be displayed in alphabetical order with the corresponding sub-categories underneath. Are you assigning categories via your Edit/Add New Post page?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-with-the-categories-moduleSimilarly, when I visit your Posts -> Categories page, I see 9 items listed. If you’re referring to the “Uncategorized” category, it isn’t possible to delete that since it’s the default.

Ok, I’ll try to explain this visually. I understand how this all works, my issue is with how the category/sub-category list is displayed in Edit Posts. It’s fine in Posts -> Categories admin, it’s fine in New Post and it’s fine on the front-end. It is NOT fine in Edit Post.

When editing a post, chosen categories automatically move to the top of the list.
That extra Research category is odd though. Did you want it removed completely?

There is no logic in my mind why in Edit Post the hierarchy is lost, which means a user can’t edit the post’s categories because one can’t tell which is a parent, which is a sub-category and if so, which parent it belongs to. Am I the only one that thinks this is just useless (poor programming)? Again I ask too if there’s a fix for this?
Yes, the extra Research category is a bug. I’m guessing the only way to get rid of it is in the raw database, which is not something I want to mess with. I realize this is open source and no one is responsible. I have to find the answer in the community or hire a programmer to debug this. Very disappointing.
-
There’s no fix for it yet, but I do see your point. We’ll see what can be done about that.
The extra category is actually something that we can take care. We’re looking into that too.
-
Thank you! Can you tell me, is the category problem specific to the theme being used or is this a WP problem where the issue would be the same regardless of theme used. I know this doesn’t happen with pro themes like WooThemes (which I’m using for another client).
-
That depends on which category problem you mean.
The lost hierarchy on the edit screen is specific to WordPress itself. You’ll see the same no matter which blog you’re using.
The extra category is specific to just your blog. We’ll get that fixed as soon as we can.

I ask because the lost hierarchy on the post edit screen is NOT happening on a hosted version of WP (3.2.1) using a WooTheme. Is a hosted version different than what I’m using here on wordpress.com? I realize the latest version is 3.3.1.
Thanks for nixing the extra category :)

No, it’s not consistent. I have tested in another client’s hosted version of WP (3.2.1) using a WooTheme. It does NOT happen. If it did there’d be a lot more people talking about this poor logic.

I found a solution but of course I cannot implement this in my blog because it’s not a separately hosted WP.

My last post about this. I’m done. Here’s a simple solution from WordPress.org support forum. There are posts going back for 2 years about this issue.

We freed up that extra category, so you can now delete it if desired.
We’ll look into fixing that, but it’s probably something needs to be run by WordPress.org.
