Posts' Feature Image not showing

    2nd request for help:

I am having consistent problems with the system reading my posts’ featured images. I set the image when drafting a post and when the post appears in the Topics categories or sections the featured image is not being shown. All that shows up in my profile photo. For example, when my post shows up in the Politics section the featured image I set is not displayed, it is only my default profile picture.

This is NOT the custom header image. This is the “featured image” for individual postings.

In order to get the system to recognize these images I’ve had to delete them and reload them onto my media library and then go through the whole process again setting the feature image and so on. This is what I’ve had to do over the last few of weeks but today (2/18) this is not working at all.

Can someone please let me know if I am doing something wrong or is there is just some glitch in the system?

when the post appears in the Topics categories or sections the featured image is not being shown

We bloggers have no control over which images are displayed on global tags pages.

    Timetheif> Thanks for responding.

It is my understanding that on some like the politcs section that is where the featured image is displayed along with the first few lines of the post. Isn’t this what the “featured image” is supposed to be? I mean, otherwise why would we have the option to “set” that particular image with each post we create? And it has worked before, which makes it seem logical that setting the the featured image is what should be displayed.

Am I incorrect in my thinking here?

Yes: you’re confusing posts featured in the global tag pages with images featured in your blog. This is what featured images do:

justpi> Thanks for the prompt response. It appears my theme (Twenty-eleven” does support the featured image and from information you supplied, it seems that these “featured images” are supposed to replace the default image when the post is displayed in the section pages I’ve mentioned earlier. I understand and do not expect them to show on the category/section pages that just have a list of recent posts (like History) but in those like the Politics or Environment categories they do.

So I’m still at a lose as to why this isn’t not working consistently.

    You’re welcome.
But I don’t see how the “information I supplied” makes you insist. Timethief already pointed out that we have no control over which images are displayed on the global tag pages. And my post says that (in the theme you’re using) a properly sized featured image replaces the regular header image when you view a single post or a static page.

    In more concrete terms:

All the images that are showing up at the moment on the first page of http://en.wordpress.com/tag/politics/ are regularly inserted images, not featured images.
If your post “Gun Control” showed up with an image on that global tag page, the image would be this one:
    http://mashedpotatobulletin.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/rights-vs-doing-what-is-right1.png
If you set a featured image to that post, and the image is in the right dimensions, then when you view that single post on your blog the featured image will replace this image :

I swear I read that the featured replaces the default image which took to mean the default profile picture.

Anyways, this doesn’t seem to be making much sense to me. In general it’s counterintuitive. My interpretation of what a “feature image” should be is different than what wordpress’s is. Based on the numerous non-profile pictures from all the other posters that show up on the topic pages I’ve been talking about it would make sense that those are the “featured image”. After all, with regard to my posts’ appearance on those pages, it wasn’t until I started “setting” the feature image that those pictures I designated started showing up next to my posts’ listing on those topic pages.

Anways, thank you for responding. Maybe wordpress could consider providing bloggers the option to control which pictures do show up on those topics’ pages as they serve as attention grabbers that draw readers to particular postings.

There are two spearate issues here and you are mixing them up.

We bloggers have no control over which if any images are displayed on global tag page entries. Using a featured image does increase the chances of it appearing on the global tag pages but we have no control over this at all.

    Thank you for your comments.

In the end it will simply be a source of ongoing frustration.

I set the image when drafting a post and when the post appears in the Topics categories or sections the featured image is not being shown.

Please understand that I have been here almost 6 years and in all that time the trickle of traffic from the WordPress.com global tags pages has never been more than a trickle. The most pouplar tag pages have new posts being entered 24 hours per day from all over the world in accord with the dates and timestamps at publication. It takes only minutes on those pages for a post to be pushed onto the next page.

It’s Google search that brings in significant traffic to blogs. That’s why it’s important to understand how Google operates and what the basic SEO elements for bloggers are.
