Posts Not Displaying in Category Page

I recently noticed that two posts are not displaying properly in the appropriate Category Page. In the category page here ( https://whammyanalyzes.wordpress.com/category/how-to-play/ ), there should be two more posts located between ‘How to Play Luz Noceda’ and ‘How to Play Amity Blight’. The posts are called ‘How to Play Zuko’ ( https://whammyanalyzes.wordpress.com/2021/08/06/how-to-play-zuko-in-avatar-legends/ ) and ‘How to Play Double Trouble’ ( https://whammyanalyzes.wordpress.com/2021/07/30/how-to-play-double-trouble-in-thirsty-sword-lesbians/ ).
In the management for both posts, both are shown as being in the ‘How to Play’ category, are public posts, and have the ‘How to Play’ tags, just in case. Both posts also show up in their sub-category. They also show up as being in that category in the My Site section for the category as well. So, at first glance, everything looks correct for them showing up in that category page and the are not. I have no idea what could be causing them to not display properly

I’m afraid I have no idea either!
It doesn’t appears to be a caching issue, as I manually cleared your site’s cache, and they didn’t show up. But I can’t think what else it could be.
Try editing those posts, remove the category, and update. Then add back the category and update again. Does that make any difference?
You can also try setting them back to draft entirely, and republishing, and see if that helps at all.
Let us know the results.

Sorry for the wait on the response, missed the email informing of it.
Anyway, I started with removing the category and updating thing on both posts, which didn’t fix the problem. In fact, an even weirder issue appears when you try that. If you remove even one of them from the “How to Play” category the Amity Blight article also disappears from the category. So both of them need to be present in the category for the Amity Blight one to remain but will not themselves show up in the category.
I also tried the convert to draft and republish thing, but that didn’t fix it either.

Okay, I then tried to do something a little extreme and deleted the category and its sub-categories so I could just reassign everything fresh to see if that would fix it…and now it won’t let me recreate the category cause “Name already exists”.

Apologies for third post in a row but there was no edit function. The not making a new category thing was just a cache issue. Cleared cache, it let me remake all the categories and stuff and…they still don’t show up in the parent “How to Play” category.

That’s a really weird issue and I cannot recreate it on my end. Can you please create a new post, assign the category, and copy the contents of one of the affected posts? I just want to see if it’s something with those specific posts.

So, did as you suggested for both just to make sure, and the “new” versions of the post show up in the category.
It also caused the older version of the posts to also now reappear in the category and the “How to Play Luz Noceda” and “How to Play Twilight Sparkle” post to disappear from view instead. I then unpublished one of the new versions, and one of the posts returned to view. And long story short I just started adding random posts from other categories into the category and posts after “How to Play Amity Blight” keep disappearing but nothing happens to the ones before it. Just as a test I then added in a post from prior to the Amity one to the category but nothing was affected, so whatever is going on seems particularly contained to everything after that particular post. Removing it from the category, however, does not solve the issue, nor does reverting it to a draft.
I got absolutely nothing unless this is some weird thing happening with how the theme displays post in a category. But it seems really weird this error is occuring even after I completely deleted the category and rebuilt.

The weird thing is that I just published two new posts the other week (How to Play Scrooge McDuck and How to Play Lena) and they had absolutely no effect on anything, nor any of the other posts. It was only publishing the test of Zuko and Double Trouble or taking a post from another category and putting it into the category that caused things to get screwy, and now I just made a test post (just titled “Test Post Blah Blah Blah”) and now replicated the “adding a new post caused Luz Noceda to disappear and Double Trouble to reappear” deal.

Tried one other idea, the issue persists if I switch out the link to be to the Tag of “How to Play” instead of the category.

And just tried making a whole new category with a different name, putting them all in there, issue still persists. Only thing I haven’t tried at this point is putting a whole bunch of posts in another category and see if the issue starts to occur there after a certain number of posts.
And apologies for all the extra comments I keep making: no edit means only way to update with all the stuff I keep trying.

I’m having trouble keeping up on your comments here. Can you share some specifics here so we can take a closer look?
What is the name of the new category? What is the title of the post (or posts ) that should be showing up in that category but do not? Still the same posts as you mentioned before?
What is the URL of the page you are checking for them on (but not finding them?)

Also if I can add, it is hard for us to keep up with you when you are making 2-3 changes and exportations between your replies. With this in mind would it be OK if you hold off on further changes until we can take a look at where things stand now, as well as take our lead and just make the changes we suggest, then pause so we can take a look?
When troubleshooting an issue it’s best if we change just one thing at a time and the observe the result. It can be hard to assess what is going on if several changes are made at the same time. Thanks for your patience!

Sorry about that. I was just trying a few different ideas based on what people were suggesting to see if they did anything and reporting on it. I currently have everything back to the starting point as it was at the beginning of this thread.
Currently I have been checking this URL to look for the missing posts since this is the parent category link: https://whammyanalyzes.wordpress.com/category/how-to-play/
The new category I made to try and see if persisted across categories was this: https://whammyanalyzes.wordpress.com/category/tabletop-builds/
The two posts that are missing are titled “How to Play Zuko” and “How to Play Double Trouble”, but the specific thing that seems to happening as per above is when a new post is added to the “How to Play” category posts after “How to Play Amity” are what is disappearing. So, for example, when I added a second “How to Play Zuko” post per Fstat’s suggestion the original “How to Play Double Trouble” reappeared and “How to Play Luz Noceda” disappeared. I was able to replicate that by adding in more post from other topics, which kept moving the pair of missing posts more and more recently every time a new post was added. It seems to always be two posts, with the specific pair of missing posts changing as more posts are added to the category.

The two posts that are missing are titled “How to Play Zuko” and “How to Play Double Trouble”,
Currently, I see these posts are set to draft, so they wouldn’t appear under this status.
That’s an interesting point about the missing articles, after more articles are published – Is it just these articles that are missing or just the articles that appear in this place in the sequence?

So the two that are drafts were recently created ones to see if the issue was the original posts specifically or something else. The original ones can be found here:
It was in making those two drafts (which were published then put back into drafts) that found the weird issue of posting a new thing to the category causes the pair of missing articles to shift over one.
So, right now it’s this the five posts in a row as they should appear, with the missing ones in brackets:
Twilight Sparkle – Luz – [Zuko – Double Trouble] – Amity
When I publish the first of those two drafts, this happens:
Twilight Sparkle – [Luz – Zuko] – Double Trouble – Amity
When I publish both drafts it shifts like this:
[Twilight Sparkle – Luz] – Zuko – Double Trouble – Amity
And I would presume the same would occur if I did a third, fourth, etc. Perhaps not coincidentally, the day I posted this help thing (October 23) was also the day I posted the “How to Play Lena” and “How to Play Scrooge McDuck” posts. I just temporarily moved them out of the category and lo and behold both the Zuko and Double Trouble post reappeared.
So, somehow, publishing those two articles caused two articles to not show up in the “How to Play Category” starting with Double Trouble and Zuko, and any additional article after that shifts the set of missing articles over by one. The only other thing I can think of is those two posts are also still being presented as “featured” post but the featured tag isn’t present in them that I can see -shrug-.

And actually, after I said that the featured tag was visible in the editing for those two posts again so I deleted the tag and…both of those missing articles reappeared in the tag and now all “How to Play” articles are properly appearing in the Category:

So something goes wrong when I set blog posts to be “Featured”. I have no idea why.

This looks like a theme bug, so I’m gonna try and recreate it and let you know if I find anything.
