If I set front page to posts “nothing found”
If I publish drafts, fine front page displays

You evidently use the word “draft” as a descriptor when referring to a published page. However, since by definition a draft page is an unpublished page, the effect described in your second statement is to be expected. Same regarding the third statement.

I meant to say “post” rather than “page,” but the argument holds in either case.
Your fourth statement,
If I change theme, not an issue
doesn’t cohere. A draft post is never a published post. Whether it is visible to you while you’re logged in might, I guess, vary according to theme used.
Have I misunderstood the effects you’ve described?

I assumed it may be related, could be a wrong assumption. -
I’ve been able to view my drafts on every theme I’ve ever used, and so can Staff. However — since I’m the only non-Staff User with access to the adminstrative areas of the site — theoretically, no one else can.

Could you try to explain what you mean by “in posts no content appears in content section (even where there is published posts as well)”?
I think the problem might lie in the fact that the content of the “Featured Content” area is essentially an archive page. Since a post can not be archive until it is published, it won’t be included here. However, Twenty Fourteen support page indicates that “up to six posts” can be displayed in the area, either as a grid or a slider. Therefore, it’s not clear why the published posts also wouldn’t display in the area, unless this (failure to display) result is triggered any time the posts assigned to the Feature Content include one or more which are not published.

The key phrase in the quote is “up to” (six posts). So why wouldn’t five published posts appear in the Featured Content area if the sixth was a draft?
