Posts not showing up in categories

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d like my posts to be separated by categories. So I made categories – Travel, Books, etc. – and added them as a menu at the top of my page. When I write a new post, I click the appropriate category. But when I click on any of my categories, the only posts that show up are my ‘uncategorized’ ones. Help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi, @storilines,

I see that for the post https://storilines.wordpress.com/2017/09/19/the-residents-of-stori-stables/
that you have tags set but no categories.

If your menu is heading to the categories but you only have tags that could be the issue. Take a quick look and let me know.

I am happy to assist if this is not the case.

Ummm . . . I’m not exactly sure how I would know. Sorry, I’m super un-tech-savvy. When I write a post and pull down the category / tags drop down menu, there are my categories – Stori Stables, Travels and Books. So I checkmark the appropriate category, as well as do the tags. Should I be doing something different? Or is there a step I’m skipping?

Why don’t we look at a specific post to confirm where we are. It sounds like you are doing the right thing.

To assist, please provide a post that you are expecting to see somewhere that isn’t showing up.
Let me know the URL of the post and exactly where you expect to see it.

Thanks! We’ll figure it out. :)

O.k., so I’m sure this sounds ridiculous but I don’t know how to send you the URL of a specific post. My recent post, “Residents of Stori Stables” shows up only on my home page, even though I checked the Stori Stables category. On the other hand, when I click on the Stori Stables category at the top of my home page, my post from the other night, “Grape Harvest” shows up. “Grape Harvest” is uncategorized.

    Is that at all helpful?

    Hi, @storilines,

No, not ridiculous at all. I’m happy to work through this with you.

For future reference, the URL is the link that is in your browser bar when you are on a page. So, it is the same as saying the page link, the link, etc. I don’t know if that clarifies URL for you or not. :)

Okay, yes, this is information is helpful.

On a side note, Stori Stables sounds lovely. I feel like this post is the beginning of a children’s book.

Back to what you are experiencing. I do see the problem. Your posts are set properly. The disconnect is the Menu setting. When you chose the Menu Category, you chose the Uncategorized category, and then changed the label to Stori Stables.
The easiest way to fix this is to go in and add a new one. Then delete the one going to Uncategorized.

I created a quick video animation to show you what I’m talking about with choosing the category: https://cloudup.com/cEjpyENl7a1

    I hope this helps!

Let me know how it goes. Best Regards.

Hi. I have created a post on http://www.ymlaenllanelli.com Everything is as usual but the post does not appear on homepage, nor in any of the categories I ticked for it to appear on the homepage sections. This is the first time it has happened. What has gone wrong?

    Hi, @llanellionline200917,

I was about to ask you to open your own thread, but I see that your site is a self-hosted site.

You’ll want to head over to the .org support forums, as this forum is for WordPress.com hosted sites only. If you need more information, take a look at my response on this thread.

If I am mistaken, please feel free to open a new thread, and someone will help you.

    Hi,

Yes, that does clarify URL. I thought that’s what they were!

The video was super helpful. Thank you!!! I think I fixed the problem (after watching the video like 5 times). Would you be so kind as to take a minute and look at my page to see if it seems good now?

    Thanks!!

You are so welcome. I see it working now. So, you’ll just want to do that for your other menu/tag combinations.

    Well done!
