Posts Not Showing Up in WordPress Reader Multiple Times

  • Unknown's avatar

I use a self-hosted blog and understand that is a WordPress.org thing, but the Reader is a WordPress.com thing so the WordPress.org forums will not be able to be of help. :)

A while ago a post I made did not show up in the WordPress Reader, even though I published it immediately. I scrolled through my Reader and turns out it acted like it had been posted 22 hours before. I deleted and re-posted the post, and it seemed to have worked then.

I don’t believe I had too much of a problem with my second-to-last post or not, but for the post I posted yesterday, I scheduled it to avoid the acting-like-it-had-been-posted-in-the-past behavior, but while it definitely posted, it refused to show up in the Reader at all. I scrolled through a week of Reader posts, but my subscribers said they weren’t able to see it in their Reader either.

I reposted the post just now, but it has still not shown up. When I go to my followed sites and click on my blog on my WordPress app, I can see the post on the followed blog page, but not in the Reader itself and I can’t see it on my computer.

I’ve googled the problem and haven’t found a solution. I would appreciate any help—thank you!

  • The WordPress.com Reader only posts in real-time for WordPress.com sites.

Posts from self-hosted WordPress.org sites appear in the Reader within 24 hours.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

What is the specific URL of the post which did not appear?

I see. My posts a couple years ago used to show up in the Reader within 15 minutes, but I guess not anymore?

The URL for the reposted post that has not shown up is https://www.madigrace.org/come-have-a-cupcake-with-a-bloggy-friend-and-me-second-url/ .

    Thanks so much!

  • Yeah, I don’t see any problem with that post. Let’s see if it appears by tomorrow. :)

Thank you! I really appreciate the help. For future reference, is there anything I can do before posting to ensure my posts will show up in the Reader, or perhaps anything I can do to make them show up more quickly?

    Thanks again.

  • Hi there,

While that post is fine, I see several XML errors for your site’s feed. That appears to be preventing the Reader from fetching your most recent posts – it won’t even let me fetch those posts manually.

Did you make any recent changes to plugins on your site? If so, that could be the cause of this. To test, try disabling all plugins on your site except Jetpack, and then let us know here so we can try manually refreshing your site’s Reader feed on our end.

Otherwise, please ask for help in the WordPress.org forums to troubleshoot what could be breaking your site’s RSS feed.

The URL for the reposted post that has not shown up is

What do you mean by “repost”? Note that changing the date on a previously-published post and republishing it at a more recent date/time will not cause it to come up in the Reader at the new time stamp. People were abusing this to make their posts always show up at the top of the Reader feed for their followers, so now a post will only appear in the Reader the first time it’s published, and at the original timestamp that it was published with.

So that is not an effective way to test issues with posts not showing up in the Reader.

I had no idea about the XML errors—thank you so much. I haven’t made any plugin changes recently, but I’ve deactivated every plugin except Jetpack now.

As for the repost, no, I didn’t change the time stamp. I moved the original post to a draft, then created a new post and copy-and-pasted the original post’s text, hoping a completely new post might show up in the Reader better than a scheduled one.

  • I have manually refreshed your feed. However, I am still getting XML errors on this end – are your plugins still disabled?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, all plugins except for Jeypack are inactive.

  • Do the errors go away once Jetpack is deactivated?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve deactivated Jetpack as well now.

  • Thanks, I see just one error currently, related to Adventure’s in the Air

Would you be willing to test briefly by changing to Adventure is in the Air ?

    Then check for errors here:
    https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.madigrace.org%2Ffeed

Or use https://www.madigrace.org/feed and run the content there against any XML validator — there are several available online.

All right, I’ve changed the title to Adventure is in the Air and ran it through that link. It says “This feed is valid, but interoperability with the widest range of feed readers could be improved by implementing the following recommendations.” and lists a few reccomendations.

  • Excellent, no that’s good now, the feed will work.

To be honest, I’ve worked with a lot of feeds and a lot of feed readers, and as long as the feed is valid, I have yet to encounter this “the widest range of feed readers” they refer to. I’m pretty convinced it’s just an exaggeration. :)

Thank you so much! Are my plugins okay to reactivate, or is one/more of them causing the issues? Should my future posts show up in the Reader okay now?

  • I recommend re-activating them one-by-one, checking https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.madigrace.org%2Ffeed after each re-activation.

That way, you’ll find the plugin that was causing the problem.

Currently, the WordPress.com Reader will have no trouble fetching your feed.

Hmm, looks like each plugin was fine. It said it was valid after each plugin I reactivated.

  • Hm, then it might have been a temporary glitch, and toggling the plugins was all that was needed. :)

Two posts have successfully shown up in the Reader now, including the one I just posted which actually showed up immediately! Thank you all so much for your help—I really appreciate it. Have a great New Year!
