Posts to Individual Pages

    Hello,

    I’m wondering how you are able to make posts to individual pages? I am writing reviews of games and I have a reviews page on my blog but I can’t seem to figure out how to post a review to the reviews page instead of having it appear just on the main page. Any help would be great.

    You can have as many pages for “static content” as you want but you can have only one running posts page that will update automatically with each new post you make. That is what a blog is all about.
    If you want each page to automatically update then what you are expecting is what a website is all about and a blog will not do that.
    You can change which page is your front page and which page is your running posts page here => Options => Reading => Reading Options
    Front Page
    Front page displays:
    Your latest posts or
    A static page (select below)
    * Front page:____
    * Posts page:____
    After you make your selections then click “Update Options” to save them.
    A better way to manage separating each of the reviews is to use Categories (Parent) and for each review a syb-category by name (child) and then when you make a post you assign it to the subcategory for the correct one.
    I hope this helps you understand this difference between a blog and a website but if you need more help please post again. :)

    i used to blockquote each entry to differentiate in my page when i wanted to do what you want to. it only works if you aren’t going to continually add to that page in the long run.

    So, how do I keep the news posts on the main page of the blog but when people click on the review page there are posts there of reviews? I tried to do the way you suggested but it moved my news posts to the reviews page and my news page ended being empty like it was my “homepage”.

    EDIT: What exactly do you mean by blockquote?

    @crywolf20
    Please read what I said above very carefully you can only have one running posts page, normally this is your front page. But, under no circumstances can you have two running posts pages and I think that’s what you are trying to achieve. It will not work. If you have your sunning posts page as your front page and then establish a page for reviews it will not automatically update. You will have to enter each post you want on it manually. This is why I suggested you use Categories and subcategories instead. Then your readers can click on Reviews under Categories in your sidebar and find them all. It’s confusing I know but bear with me.

    @sulz
    you on and I’m off ;)

    EDIT: What exactly do you mean by blockquote?

    i just blockquoted your quote. =)

    the html tag for blockquoting is

    < blockquote > text < /blockquote >
    (close the spaces between < and >)

    you can do that for your review page to separate each review, but essentially you’re just adding new material to the same page again and again, instead of posting a new post if it were done in the home page.

    you can locate the blockquote tag in your editor. just a note, some themes have better looking blockquotes than others. experiment the themes first.

    TimeThief,
    Hi. I am relative new to the world of blogging, so forgive me if I duplicate whatever has been said above, of which you responsed. This is my question/concern. If I have all my posts on a single continuous page, all the person has to do is come to my site and read all the posts and I will not get credit for them reading each individual post. How can I,

    #1 set up my blog so that people visiting my site can read each post and each post they read counts as a hit to my site.

    #2 how can I place an open comment section after each post so that people will have it right in front of them to make it easlily accessible to leave a commen?

    #3 I really like the blog stats that Word press has with the graphs and break down to the visits, however I would like to be able to monitor the hits and traffic on my site with more details. Which free Stat counter would you recommend that is fairly simply to set up, for someone who does not want to botch code? I am not real comfortable about such matters. I don’t like saying or feeling, opps after I did something that is permanent and I do not know how to undue.

    Thanks so much for your time, insight and input.

    Have a great week.

    1) Making sure that people only visit each post would require that no where on your site do you allow them to access more than 1 post at a time. This can be accomplished on main page, but not everywhere. Let me explain. Changing your options at ADMIN => OPTIONS => READING to have at most 1 entry showing will get most of this done. The main page will only show 1 post. Problem is, the way the system is setup, if they click on any of your categories, all posts in that category will show up negating the 1 post per page rule. This will also happen when they click on your archives as the posts for the entire month will show up, not just 1 at a time.

    2) As people view each individual post, the comment section will be at the bottom of each post and easility accessible to viewers. When on main page, category page or on the archive pages (for months), each entry will not have the comment box below them. You have to click the link to each individual entry for the comments box to show up.

    3) – There are only a few stats counters that work on wordpress.com that don’t use javascript and they can be found here. Personally, I use sitemeter for my site and haven’t used the other ones.

    Hope that helps you out!

    Trent

    Thanks Trent. Sorry I have not responded until now. I have been trying to sort out alot of new information. I now have a little more insight on how to connect the dots. I am curious about several items. When I person comes to my site, they only have to get into my blog and then they can read to their hearts content, and their visit will only be counted as 1hit? If so, although I am happy my visitors are reading my posts, it would be good for my stats if I got more hits out of that type of visit. Case in point, today, one of my readers, according to get clicky read 23 posts, before leaving my site. I believe I got credit for those post reads, but I think only 1 hit. How can I increase my hits for such a person?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Don’t try: it’s venial. And counterproductive.

    Every option there is for increasing the pageviews as opposed to hits (which is what you’re really talking about) ultimately lowers the readership of the blog, because all the options make reading the blog more of a hassle.

    What do you want? High stats, or a really high readership? Because they’re not the same.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Raincoaster,
    Thanks for the information. Higher readership of course. It would be nice to have high stats too. How could I make this a win win for my blog–High readership/high stats? That is the question. Thank you for your help. Craig

    Abandon the idea of raising your pageviews. It’s an archaic stat measure and as I said, every single thing you can do to increase it puts off your readers. So give up that idea altogether. Pageviews are, in a true blog format, almost meaningless; the only time they’re relevant is when a post has comments, because then they indicate that people are interested in the comments. What you should care about is your hits as a whole.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks so much for the information. It makes perfect sense to keep things as simple for the readers. Raincoaster, I would appreciate it if ou could clarify your last sentence to me, particularly, What you should care about is your hits as a whole. Hits as a whole? Does that mean blog stats, unique visits or what? Each stat counter seems to have a different total for visits. Shiny stats has my visits way above what say get clicky, site meter and wordpress has for me. Whose hits should I believe to be accurate and valid, as each stat counter has a different way of measuring visits — unique visits and other visits? Thanks for helping me understand.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I mean hits in general. ALL hits, as a total. And whether they’re trending up or down. The trend is the single most important measure of stats, because as you’ve seen not all stat counters agree on numbers; what should be absolute isn’t.

    NO STAT COUNTERS ARE LITERALLY ACCURATE. None.

    Check them to see whether more people are reading your blog or fewer people are reading it. That should be your primary concern. As for unique visits, etc, we’ve discussed that before.

    Thanks again raincoaster
