posts to show up on front page?
-
Right now on my front page it just has the explanation of what my blog is about. But the posts should show up there, newest first. How would I put the explanation “what the blog is about” in a box at the top in smaller print, with the posts showing up below that, newest first?

You must have set that page as a static front page. Go to settings>reading and in the first option “Front page displays” choose “Your latest posts.”

So, if I want to have BOTH things on my static front page (the explanation of what the blog is about AND my posts) will that work? For example, could I put the explanation in a box at the top with posts showing up underneath, or would that be too complex for me as a beginner. And are you suggesting instead that the static front page would be just posts, and the reader could see in the links at the top, the “what this blog is about” link and they could chose to go there….. but they wouldn’t see it automatically as the front page that come up when they go the blog. Which do you think is better?
-
No, that will not work because they are opposites. A post and a page are different.
If you do NOT set a static page as your front page, what people will see is all your blog posts in a vertical row. If you do set a static page as your front page, obviously it won’t be your blog, it’ll be a different page.
I always recommend having the blog itself come up first, otherwise your search engine ranking is going to be slaughtered and all your regular readers are going to be bored out of their minds with that static front page.

Thanks Vivian and Raincoaster!
I didn’t know that my ranking would be horrible if I didn’t have the posts as the front page.
Good to know.
I will change the front page to be the posts and with regards to the page that has the explanation of what the blog is about, people can just go there if they want.
That sounds like the way to go for now.
Thanks again! -

OK, I believe it’s corrected now. What do you guys think? If you have any tips for other improvements I can make, let me know! I’m very new to this! And by the way, what’s the number one best way to get traffic to my site? I think I should ask this as a new topic….

I think you should do a forum search. There are literally dozens of threads on that topic already, and most of us are tired of repeating ourselves. The answers are already in the forum.
