Posts: (unknown or deleted)

When looking at the all-time Top Posts stats on my blog Cancer: Curves Ahead, I found several dozen listings of “(unknown or deleted)” with one page view each. I’ve never seen such listings before and wonder what causes them and why they are showing in my stats. Are these views being counted in my totals?

It sounds to me like users were sent to a non-existent page, and/or deleted page, on your site. While it’s not ideal, it’s also not terrible — readers sent to such pages will have access to the rest of your site, and can also search your site for what they’re looking for.

Funny, though, that I’ve never seen this happen on my main blog, piedtype.com, even though it has more than 2,000 posts. I must surely have deleted more posts there than on a blog less than a year old.
Also, how/why should it count as a page view if there’s no page there?

Because the ‘404 Not Found’ page is technically a page. Furthermore, the post might have existed when a given page view was counted, but was deleted afterwards.
By the way, if you were to hover your mouse over each of “(unknown or deleted)” links, you’ll see that they link to the (now deleted) posts. That’ll give you an indication of which posts are missing, and might suggest where the dead links are located.
