posts,comments and drafts deleted!

  • Unknown's avatar

Today I logged into my wordpress account and discovered all of my posts, drafts, comments, pages, and stats had been deleted. My last post was yesterday afternoon and as of last night everything was still intact. Is it possible someone hacked into my account? And if they did is it possible to get any of it back?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve heard of young children deleting posts or pages by accident. But never a whole blog. Is it possible you left your computer on so someone else in the house could have used it?

Volunteers can’t help you. Only staff can.

Only the blog owner can delete a blog, and it requires clicking a link in a confirmation email as well. Was the blog registered by you?

As a precaution, I would first off suggest that you change your email passwords just in case, and make it something that would be hard for people to guess. Basically if you can remember it, it is too simple.

Also, change your password on your account here, and again, make it difficult.

The above isn’t going to stop people from using your computer for mischief (if you have the computer remember your passwords) but still a good idea.

    Richard,

http://hottonotbeanidiot.wordpress.com/ (linked to the poster allycatneil’s name)

    It has already been deleted:
“The authors have deleted this blog. The content is no longer available.”

    “Member Since
    May 26, 2010 (1 month)”

Well I guess that’s that on that.

    Richard,

From what I’ve read in these forums, true hacking has not been an issue:

    Someone (friend) guessing a password.

or someone who has been made an administrator on a blog,

or the blog owner leaving the site open where someone else can access it because the blog owner has not logged out. Perhaps a publicly accessible computer, or a housemate trying to play a prank?

I don’t know, would staff ever re-instate an account/blog in these circumstances?

That linked blog may or may not be the one the OP is talking about, though. From the post, it sounds like the content was deleted, not the blog. Regardless, contacting staff is the right advice.

If that strikes out, you can go to Google and view the Cached version of your blog and save it that way. Yahoo has an even better cache than Google.

    Yeah, yes right:
link may or not be the blog in question.

hmmm… I should try to see what I could retrieve for my blog (if it got lost: cross fingers and hope for luck and hope it won’t) using cached Google or Yahoo.

When my officially Private blog went under, I had to use Yahoo.cn if I recall, but it had virtually all of it. That wasn’t a WP.com blog though.

If a “friend” could guess a name and password for the account and for the email, if they are easy, then someone could have gotten in and deleted the blog and then intercepted the email.

I have friends who have basically, in not so many words, told a group their password that they use on everything so that it is easy to remember. I have one friend who’s password for everything is just the numeral 1 repeated 8 times (except where the service does not allow that and then he will add a few “A’s” to it).

I’m just suggesting it as a precaution.

My boss uses only two passwords for everything. I just found out last week that she uses one of them for the company’s online banking. I tried to get her to change it to something else, but she says she wouldn’t remember a new one. It’s bad because I think even some of the short-term, part-time employees know what her two passwords are because she jokes about it a lot.
    Scary? yep

This happened to me and I freaked out, since I had 80+ posts that were wiped out.. but in my case, I found out that it was just a simple database error..

I have a cpanel, so I went to “MySQL databases”, then hit the drop down next to “repair DB”, found the correct database, and hit “repair DB”.. voila! My posts and pages were back up..

    Hope that helps

@jamesnissen, since at wordpress.COM, we run on a multi-user version of wordpress, we don’t each have our own database, and we do not have access to any of those files.

Please read this entry so you are clear on the differences between free blogs being free hosted by wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG installs. Once you are aware of them then you will know what applies to one does not apply to the other. :) http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
