Pre-dating blog entries
-
Hello,
Just registered. Thinking of starting a blog. I have one simple (I think) question that I haven’t readily found an answer for, so thought I’d ask this here:
Does WordPress allow me to pre-date blog entries?
E.g., today is May 23,.2010. Can I create an entry dated August 14, 2003?
I realize that I will quickly wind up with a bunch of archved entries if I do enough of this. That’s fine. I just want to know if this is technically feasible. (If it requires coding, being pointed in the right direction would be appreciated too. I’m a programmer so tend to pick up quickly on that sort of stuff.) Thanks.

P.S. On searching the Forums, I found these brief discussions:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/change-posting-date?replies=4#post-456744
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/changing-the-date-on-a-blog-post?replies=7#post-446409
They contain some clues but don’t completely answer what I’m after. There’s discussion of “breaking URLs” which I don’t understand. I’m not talking about retroactively changing the dates of posts I’ve already made; I’m interested in making new posts with past dates.
I suspect that I may need to set up a test blog & play around with it to see what happens before I can really understand this aspect of WordPress.
Thanks.

Yes, you can, easily. Don’t worry about breaking URLs; as you’ve figured out, if they don’t yet exist, then changing the date (which is a part of the URL) can’t break the links to them.
There is, however, a limit to how far back you can date things. If you only want to go back to 2003 that should be no problem. If you want to go back to 1910, you might have a problem.

And what about the effect of backdating posts in regard to how the global tags function?
Are they not selected via the most recent post? So if someone posts an article dated in 2003, I’d think the global tags would not “see” that post at all.
Heck, even a post backdated a few days ago wouldn’t show up in gt, would it? (especially in a popular tag) -
Thank you raincoaster. Very helpful.
1tess – I don’t know what global tags are, or why I would want them to “see” my older posts. Are there reasons I should care about this?
I am asking these questions because I have ten years of writings that I would like to put up on WordPress in chronological order. I think I don’t particularly care if the older items are seen by global tags; I just want to have them up there because they form a continuum with the current posts that I will write, going forward.
Thanks.

Global tags help your blog get noticed by search engines and other wordpress.com bloggers.
Current posts will more quickly get attention from search engines. But I don’t know if new posts backdated have the same effect.
I don’t have a link to your blog, so I can’t tell what topics you write about, but I write about Japanese cooking so I show up here:

For example, I’m a bit behind in posting so my post about ramen noodles was backdated and appears lower in this list of global tags:
http://en.wordpress.com/tag/ramen-noodles/But I get hits on old posts from search engines. You may not need to worry: Google, et al will eventually find your posts…
But the global tags are a sort of “quick start” for folk to find your blog…

Thanks 1tess. I haven’t set up the actual blog yet, trying to figure out in general if it’ll work as I envision it – which I think it will now – before I get down to the details of building it.
I appreciate all the info.
