Pre-sales video questions through WordPress Business

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. I am thinking about developing a site that will solely present videos – potentially over 1000. We are looking at rolling with the WP Business. Are there really no costs for bandwidth and storage? If so, that’s amazing! But I need to confirm. Is transcoding done? Is that part of the service? Also, if there are performance issues, are there upgrades possible? I’m hoping to get has much information as possible, so I’m sure one question may lead to another. Thanks in advance for you help!

Are there really no costs for bandwidth and storage?

Yes that’s true. See here please https://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/

    Unlimited Storage
Upload as many videos, images or songs as you need, with no hidden storage or bandwidth costs. Traffic spikes cannot be more welcome.

Thanks for your very quick response, TT! I wish I had stayed on line after posting!

Regarding video, is it only the raw video that gets saved, or is there any transcoding done?

Also, if we have performance issues or receive a lot of traffic (we can hope!), is there a path to scale up?

is there a path to scale up?

No – that is done automatically by the staff that handle the servers – you do nothing – keep in mind that your site is being watched over by the same folks that keep such “minor” sites as CNN (parts of CNN.com are hosted here) up and running

Wow. So it sounds like in using WP I’m automatically being subscribed to managed servers. That’s great.

And how about transcription? Does anyone know for certain if that is taking place for WP Business?

I can’t remember how many blogs are hosted on WordPress.COM – but I think it’s well over 30,000,000 – yes all a bit managed – there are three large (last time the staff let us know) server farms with some very powerful load balancing systems as well as DDOS prevention measures in place – I think I saw that they were thinking or planning on a 4th server farm outside the U.S. a while back

If one of your Posts goes viral to 1,000,000 page views in a single day – they got you covered – the servers might breath hard for a few minutes while the load balance kicks in but your site will not crash

    And how about transcription?

Not a clue what that is so I have flagged this for staff attention – however they are a bit backed up – they are on a company wide meetup plotting how to take over the internet (I am not kidding :: )

  • Hi @brjuniper, we would automatically encode the video for you so it can be displayed on a number of devices. Let us know if you have more questions!

Hello again. I just discovered that I cannot find a theme available in WP.com that has all the features I need. Unfortunately, it looks like I have to be hosted outside of WP.com?

But I just heard that it might be possible that if I apply a JetPack plugin, and subscribe to WP’s Business-level plan, that I can possibly upload videos into VideoPress.com. Am I understanding this correctly? Do I just need to somehow point to VP in some interface and I’m good? Are there any additional customizations or extra costs that I need to be aware of?

    Thanks!

    Jim

  • You’d be welcome to do that, Jim. You can get VideoPress alone or with some other helpful features. Let me know if you need more help with that.
